with new installation of f10 and get an auto notice that updates are available.
when i select 'update', 'kpackagekit' pops up showing selection for updates.
when i select 'update' again, i get a notice of 'authentication failed'.
so just what authentication is failing and how do i authenticate?
also, i would use 'yum update', but there are too many for limited disk space. or would i be better off updating in an alphabetical order?
searching last 2 months of emails show no similar error.
suggestions? pointers? links?
tia.
peace out.

I saw same error. This was the first time I used kpackagekit. I switched back to 'yum update'.
Thanks, Anoop

Are you trying to use it as root? PolicyKit chokes on that: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=447266 and as PolicyKit is what handles authentication in PackageKit (and thus also KPackageKit), this also affects KPackageKit.
Try using KPackageKit as a non-root user. I could also provide you with a patched PolicyKit which works as root if you absolutely need to run KPackageKit as root.

Yes Kevin, I was running it as root.
Thanks, Anoop

yes. i have always run updates and package installs as root. saves a lot of typing in su and password.

i do not 'absolutely need to', but it does make 'my life' easier.
along with having to learn this new kde with 'plasmoids', 'widgets', and 'gotchaits'. :)
so what is patch?

It's a source patch though, I haven't published any packages with it yet.
I'd have hoped the official Fedora PolicyKit (and PolicyKit upstream) to get fixed, but it looks I was too optimistic there. :-(

thanks. pulled, but not had time to patch yet. i have been busy with other configuring of f10 and just now getting back into past emails.

better an optimist than a pessimist. ;^)
