Linux Format this month mentions a plugin that takes the largest possible crop after a rotate or perspective adjustment. It's found at http://registry.gimp.org/plugin?id=7636
I see that there is a plugins subdirectory under ~/.gimp-2.2, but putting the python script there doesn't seem to make it available in any menu. Where should it go?

Sorry about that - Steven's given you the correct URL; his is the one I tried to give you. I've done a bit of experimentation, but so far, that page hasn't proven too helpful. I tried using the command gimptool* but this is obviously not intended for python scripts. I tried adding the script to the scripts directories, but it didn't appear in any menus - still experimenting. Let me know if you figure it out.

No luck so far. The doc that Steven pointed us to talks about .c files, but this is a .py script. Putting it in the local ~/.gimp plugin folder doesn't appear to do anything, and doesn't seem appropriate if the doc's description is correct. I tried moving it to /usr/gimp/2.0/plug-ins (this on FC4) where the python-fu scripts are, but that doesn't seem to add it to any menu.

Maybe, if you find a python script that works, do a text search for that filename and maybe you will find a config file that points to your python script plug-ins. It is a long shot but that is what I would try...

Claude, another avenue to explore. Checking back to the mention in LXF, it says that it uses the SciPy library. I've installed the ipython package, which is supposed to provide that. That's as far as I've got, though. I've posted a question on the Linux Format forum, so I'll report back if I get anything useful.

I think that the latter is the expanded url. I cut and pasted "file:///usr/share/gimp/2.0/help/en/concepts-intermediate.html" (sans quotes) into Firefox and it displayed:

Unfortunately, no. I did find that and try it. A plugin that can't be accessed from any menu is not very useful :-( If I get a solution I'll report back.

gtk+-2.0.pc is provided by gtk2-devel. It seems that not having that as a requirement for the gimp package is a small bug. Either it should be added to gimp's dependencies or gimptool should be split out and have gtk2-devel as a dependency.
Try installing gtk2-devel and then see if gimptool works for you.

I've tried the command both as user in the directory containing the .py file and also as root giving the full path to the file. What am I missing?

Anne -
For Python plug-ins, all you should have to do is put the .py file into ~/gimp-2.2/plug-ins and make it executable. I tried this plug-in also, but running gimp-2.2 from the command line produces this:
#gimp-2.2 Traceback (most recent call last): File "/home/cr33/.gimp-2.2/plug-ins/transp-cropper.py", line 54, in ? from scipy.optimize import fmin, fminbound ImportError: No module named scipy.optimize
Installing the two scipy packages I found in yum did not help.... So I guess the plug-in script is funky or I'm missing a python module somewhere....

Bingo! That's what I was missing, the "make it executable" part...something was just not making sense. Too bad about the other issues with the script - I have often wished I had a script that would do just what this one claims to do.
FWIW I got this plug-in to work (like a charm).
You need Scipy 0.4.8 (newer versions do *not* compile on FC5).
I got it here: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/scipy/scipy-0.4.8.tar.gz?download
Followed (most of) the instructions here: http://www.scipy.org/Installing_SciPy/Linux
I didn't copy anything to usr/local - just did 'python setup.py install' as root. You'll need to go grap some coffee after that one.....

The instructions there are for FC5 and I'm on FC4 on this box. They go on to say

Do I need to remove the fedora scipy package that I already installed?
Do you think I need to follow the instructions on the 'Other distributions' page?

Just as an aside, I went to experiment with this new capability this am, only to find that the layer arbitrary rotation was broken. I tried the exact same thing I was doing on another installation, just to make sure I wasn't leaving out a step or doing something not permitted, but no. I was loading an image, selecting layer/transform/arbitrary rotation - the dialog appears, the dashed lines appear to indicate the level of rotation - clicking 'rotate' however makes the rotated selection vanish, and has no ultimate effect; the image is not rotated.
I just removed and reinstalled Gimp, but no improvement. It would appear that something else has broken - the vertical and horizontal flips still work, only the arbitrary rotation is broken.

Odd - I just did the same thing - layer>tranform>arbitrary rotation. Clicking 'Rotate' applies the rotation both when I use the slider and use the "handles" to set the angle....
In short, it works on my installation.
I sometimes find it helpful to run GIMP from the command line when I'm fiddling with it - often it will spew out very helpful info when something goes wrong...

Got around to investigating this, and I found the solution on The Gimp list. Double-clicking the rotation button yields options - I had to reset the option for "Affect" to "Layer" - I hadn't deliberately changed that setting, so that's what had me confused.

In a terminal, type: python And press enter. You should get some info about your version of Python and be left with a prompt that looks like:
Next, type: import scipy and press enter - if it throws an error there, scipy is not fully installed.

Scipy doesn't seem to be packaged in the standard repositories. There had been some talk about putting it in Extras. Scipy can be installed from the SciPy web site http://www.scipy.org, from source, but that would likely be difficult for you (maybe for me as well). I haven't looked hard for a RPM. ____________________________________________________________________ TonyN.:' mailto:tonynelson@georgeanelson.com ' http://www.georgeanelson.com/

There is a directory /usr/lib/gtk-2.0, so perhaps it's a path problem. If it works for you, perhaps you could guide me on this?
gtk+-2.0.pc is provided by gtk2-devel. It seems that not having that as a requirement for the gimp package is a small bug. Either it should be added to gimp's dependencies or gimptool should be split out and have gtk2-devel as a dependency.
Wouldn't it make more sense to move gimptool into the gimp-devel package, which does have the necessary dependency?

Yeah, probably. :)

Hi Ann!
A guess at this time (no time to sort it out right now) - found with "locate gimp": /usr/lib/gimp/2.0/python
Hope it helps!
Already tried that one - no go

Hi Ann!
Then I would look at the script and see how it registers itself in the menus.
Good Hunting!
Tod
Also - It is for 2.0 and you are 2.2 - that may be a problem.

Todd: You seemed to have replied to my 'amen' post with a "Hi Ann!" (it's Anne by the way ;-)
Chris Mohler has solved the problem, with a detailed post with links, to how to make this work. The script doesn't exactly do what I thought, but, it looks interesting, and bears more scrutiny, as with all matters 'Gimp' - but, in any event, his instructions do work, and so does the script, now.

Hi Anne Hi Claude!
Apologies to both (I probably should leave off the computer and go to bed sooner, I make silly mistakes if I do not).
Sincerely!
Tod

It looks as though getting this to work on FC4 is not trivial, so I think I'll wait a little until I upgrade the box. Thanks to all for helpful suggestions
