Uh...I had a similar problem...THE WHOLE DAMNED USB SUBSYSTEM was pranged. It could be many things, but the consensus is a slightly-modified kernel version of Axle's. Webcam, CF reader, and even mouse it dead as a doorknob.
/var/log/message's last words on the subject: "USB subsystem unregistered" and it even quit using the IRQ. (/proc/interrupts).
I keep hoping for a new version to come out so I can prove/disprove it as being the kernel.
Could this be your situation, as well?

Did you upgraded to arjanv's new 2.6 kernels? My usb subsystem was gone when I've tried it..

I got the same error. I think that gphoto2 (which gtkam uses) has a detection bug of some sort. For me it detects the camera model as 0x306a when it should be 0x306c. Try downloading pictures using the following at a command line:
gphoto2 --usbid "0x4a9:0x306c=0x4a9:0x306a" -P
This forces it to use the proper model id, and worked for me. I cannot seem to get gtkam to use this option though, so I do not know how to get the GUI version to work.

Unfortunately, I only had the camera for one night --- borrowed it. So I cannot test this update to see if it does the trick. If I ever get to borrow it again I will try it, but I do not expect to.
