Hi all,
Just a quick question: Is it possible to install the latest version of openoffice under fedora core1?
Thank you very much,
Li

Have you tried the binary installer from OpenOffice.org? That probably is your only option, other than upgrading the core OS.
I just tried it out as a root user ( I already have 1.1 version installed) but it looks that it will take forever to install.
I don't know what is going on.

First go to http://openoffice.org and read the docs and download the rpm's. It is easy to install the rpm's. The docs they have are easy to understand. And yes I should install in FC1
~WILL~
Thanks Will, but do you mean this file: OOo_2.0.0_LinuxIntel_install.tar.gz?
I decompressed it and cd to folder RPMS and issued this command as a root rpm -Uvih *rpm (copy from the docs)
and it took forever to install and I stopped installing it.

OOPs, I forgot it does come into a tar.gz. Sorry about that.
That is weird, I installed it before and it installed in about 2 minutes or less. Cannot remember. How long is it taking??? What package is it getting too???
~WILL~
Will,
I don't know: no start and no end, only the cursor appears on the screen. It is different from what I install other softwares before. It seems get stuck.

You might have a bad RPM package. cd to a suitable directory, and see if this turns anything up:
find -iname "*.rpm" -exec rpm -K {} ; | grep NOT
If that turns anything up, re-download the tarball.
Hi Charles,
Thanks. Nothing shows up after I followed the command you suggested.
If I install it this way: rpm -Uvih *.rpm I got this message: Segmentation fault
If I install it this way: rpm -vih *.rpm
I got the following on the screen and got stuck at 4% forever.
Preparing... ########################################### [100%] 1:openoffice.org-core08 ########################################### [ 4%]

I would not expect it to segfault that way, but you are contradicting the arguments.
1> U is for Updating a package. 2> i is for installing a package. 3> v is for verbose output (more messages to the console). 4> h is for the hash marking (progress bar).
So for updating a package I use:
rpm -Uvh *.rpm
for installing a package from scratch (like what you should do with kernels) I use:
rpm -ivh *.rpm
I would expect an error in rpm if you use both i and U in the same command as you've done above. A segfault is a bit much and I assume the programmers haven't debugged that parameter combination.
As to why it takes so long, I would rebuild the rpm database and clear the cache files - this smells like an old problem I used to have.

Hi Edward,
I am new to Linux. How do you rebuild the rpm database and clear thde cache?
Thanks,
Li

The usage of -i and -U at the same time should not be allowed in my books. Time for a bug (enhancement) report on this.
The usage of -U will install a package that hasn't been installed yet so -i isn't required.
rpm {-U|--upgrade} [install-options] PACKAGE_FILE ...
This upgrades or installs the package currently installed to a newer version. This is the same as install, except all other version(s) of the package are removed after the new package is installed.
Hi Edward,
Thank you very much.
I rebuild the rpm database using this command as a root user:
rpm -vv -rebuilddb
then cd to the openoffice folder and type rpm -ivh *.rpm
and my computer install openoffice within 2 min
Then I cd to desktop-integration folder and type
rpm -ivh the_specifce_rpm_for_the_redhat.rpm
the file is installed in 20 seconds.
Finally I go back to the main menu/office/
I can see all the openoffices are on desktop.
Another question: How do I remove the older version(1.1 version) away?

You've "installed" it, which means it's installed as well as what was already there. If you "updated" it, older version would have been replaced by the newer ones.
Generally you only install things like kernels (where you want to keep more than one version on the system), or packages that have never previously been installed on your system; and you update/upgrade packages as you go along. You can also use the update/upgrade installation method for new packages, and RPM will install them with no problems.
I would have used "rpm -Uvh" for installing the OpenOffice.org packages.
How do I remove the older version(1.1 version) away?
You can try "erasing" the older versions, using "rpm -e" with the specific package details. But you might strike some problems that require you to remove the old and new packages, then install the new ones by themselves (again).
