You'll need to install a 3rd party repo like rpmfusion[1] and install
lame. Personally I installed RockBox[2] on my Ipod 4G and use ogg
audio files instead.

In the great history of GNU naming, LAME stands for LAME Ain't an Mp3 
Encoder. LAME is not an mp3 encoder. It is a GPL'd patch against the 
dist10 ISO demonstration source. LAME is totally incapable of producing 
an mp3 stream. It is incapable of even being compiled by itself. You 
need the ISO source for this software to work. The ISO demonstration 
source is also freely available, but any commercial use (including 
distributing free encoders) may require a license agreement from FhG 
(Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, Germany).

Since I have started using Linux, I'm getting to be a "tight wad" to 
cheap to pay for MP3s .

CDRipper, Grip and other ripping programs take CD tracks, and
convert them to music files. (Usually .wav files.) The same program
may convert them to .mp3 or .ogg files. In any case, there are
several programs that use lame or notlame to convert between
formats. But you probably will not be happy about the sound quality
when converting between .ogg and .mp3 files. Because of the way they
compress the sound file, each looses some of quality. But they do
not do it the same way, so converting from one to the other results
in a greater loss of quality.

I just did this:
/usr/bin/lame "my song.wav" "my song.mp3"

I'm listening to the mp3 song at this moment.
Consider installing and using lame.i386.

Is there a front-end for ffmpeg, I would play  "H" trying to figure 
howto run ffmpeg from the command line.

It converts to OGG, MP3, FLAC, WAV or AAC, as long as you have the 
corresponding codec installed. In this case, lame.

I forgot to say that I'm running a X86_64 box and there is no lame.i386 
on my repos.

Marcelo you are right, But!! I didn't go into Preferances and change 
conversion to MP3.

Hmm!?  "Mpeg Layer 3 Audio" *is* and mp3 file type. The file command
shows this for me:
$ file "my song.mp3"
my song.mp3: MPEG ADTS, layer III, v1, 128 kBits, 44.1 kHz, JntStereo

$ file "my song.wav"
my song.wav: RIFF (little-endian) data, WAVE audio, Microsoft PCM, 16
bit, stereo 44100 Hz

my wav file is about 70MB, while the mp3 is about 6.5MB.

I found another App in the Fedora repo, "Sound Converter" works great

out of the box.

There are about 16 million switches (man ffmpeg or google it), but I
find  "ffmpeg -i file.wav file.mp3" generally works.

Never tried converting ogg and never owned an ipod.  It does allow me to 
listen to my cds on an mp3 player.
