What do I need to to in order to add a new printer under fedora. And how to add it by editing the config files, rather than the gui, so that I could understand the behind-the-curtain things that happen.

Even without the GUI, you don't edit any config files to add a printer. The command is "lpadmin -p <name> -E -v <device> -m <ppdfile>". You must uninstall system-config-printer before doing this, or it will overwrite the changes done from command line. See "man lpadmin" and read the CUPS Software Administrator's Manual: http://www.cups.org/doc-1.1/sam.html

This guide details the config files and the required adjustments:
http://www.brennan.id.au/15-System_Printing.html
It also details how to update and install the PPD (PostScript Printer Description) file for your printer.

Thanks Miles and Markku, that did help. Is CUPS the default printing system on Fedora?
