Hi,
I moved to F41 and I still cannot use Plasma with wayland because Gimp and VirtualBox are unusable, in particular because of the mouse.
To solve half of my issues, I was thinking of moving my VM from VirtualBox to KVM. Maybe some of you could share their experience: - Has anyone done that before? - Is KVM as powerful as VirtualBox? - Is KVM working fine with Wayland?
Thanks,
F

What exactly is the issue?

What issues are you having? I've never had a problem with GIMP in the years I've been using Wayland. Although I've been using Gnome, not KDE, so maybe it's something specific to that.

Yes, KVM is just as good as virtualbox and works fine with Wayland.

For VirtualBox, I have no mouse in my Windows VM, so quite annoying :=) For Gimp, the widgets get out of the screen, so again quite annoying. Try to place a text on an image and change the font. The font list starts well above the screen. I think there was other issues but I do not remember. This one was already too much for me.
Thanks

KVM is more powerful than VirtualBox, in that it can allow direct access to PCI hardware such as GPUs (e.g. for gaming). This isn't for the faint of heart but it can be done, whereas in VB it can't.
It works fine with Wayland.
The downside is that IMO the documentation is less organised and user- friendly than VBs, and in some use cases you need to be familiar with QEMU. However setting up a basic VM using Virtual Machine Manager is fairly straightforward.

Yes - I moved a couple of VMs running Windows 10 from VirtualBox to KVM.
- Is KVM as powerful as VirtualBox?
My impression is that KVM was *slightly* slower than VirtualBox for those Windows VM. But I never performed an actual measurement. In my case the performance of the VM isn't critical.

I cannot answer this, as for me, Wayland is not yet "fit for purpose", and therefore I am still using X11.
My main reason for using VirtualBox originally was the USB support. Once KVM/QEMU provided that the balance shifted to KVM. Software updates for the hypervisor are handled when I update the system. There is a dnf repo that provides the updated ISO for the Windows guest support, and I use that to update the guest support when I do other updates after "patch Tuesday".

Thanks for all your answers. I've started to move my VM. I'm not their yet but I have not urgency.
Thanks,

Running Win11 in KVM on Wayland since F40, now F42. No issues.
