Dear All,
I'm staring change to linux to work on editing things, such as, documents,
presentations, figures,... I used to do those things on Windows machines. Of course, all
my other jobs has been done on Linux and I am very pleased of that. As a starter, I found
it is difficult to find apropriate programs. Your suggestions will be highly appreciated.
I'm interested in doing the following:
1, write Latex files,
2, write a daily record,(diary?)
3, occasionaly edit a couple of webpages,
4, organize references

Lyx is supposed to be nice. It is available from extras.

Lyx exports to LaTeX - but it isn't really LaTeX - I got started with
LyX but found that I was using the "ERT" boxes (insert raw tex) too
often - using a text editor with goot LaTeX support (such as emacs with
auctex) is faster and preferable. At least for me.

Not sure what is required here. If it is just a text editor, I like
nedit. If it is more than that, I don't have a recommendation. I don't
write Latex.

Personal preference is Quanta

Not sure what "references" are. If this is an address book then I use
the one that is part of Evolution, which, by the way, is a pretty good
email client as well :)

never used them. Is that what you meant?

just plain text), but I think you could use something like kontact
(strictly speaking: korganizer or knotes)

To modify something quickly, I use jed (it's a reduced emacs), but if you're
looking something more visual, try with nvu or quanta
4, organize references
bibtex did you say?
auctex with emacs again.

I use gedit for all my HTML, CSS, and PHP
editing needs, once the file
has the proper extension (.html, .css, .php, etc) it comes up with very
excellent (though not flawless) syntax highlighting. Quick, easy,
universal. It's better to learn the coding than to let a frontend come
up with its own often messy code anyway. http://www.w3schools.com :)

Of faults in w3schools, or for better sites?
It doesn't take long to find numerous flaws with W3schools once you
start reading their wrong explanations of what things are in HTML. And
from then on it just snowballs. Once you know something is a bad
reference, it's far better to just ignore it completely, rather than try
and weed out what's correct or not. And that's something that someone
who's learning it will not be able to do. They won't know what's wrong
and should be ignored, and having a list of pages to ignore, and pages
to believe is going to be a complete pain.
Someone else has already posted links to the W3C, where the HTML
specifications are codified. They're the authoritative reference, but
terse and dry (rather like using reference manuals to confirm what
you're doing is being done correctly), not much good for learning from
scratch unless you like working that way. I recommend authoring with
HTML 4.01 strict. It's your best chance at things working, and working
fairly consistently. Newer version of HTML have poor support, and don't
do anything that HTML 4.01 can't do, as far as web browsers are
concerned.
The WDG at <http://www.htmlhelp.com/> is better than the W3C for good
advice for beginners, without leading them astray (like W3schools). It
also has copies of the specifications, and with more descriptive
information as well.

I agree - that's why I use emacs + auctex for LaTeX and bluefish for

Nirvana Editor {nedit} is my preference for GUI text editing, vim
for console text editing. Emacs is powerful but it's complex keystroke
commands underwhelm me. I have used a ton of different console based
text editors over the last few decades and emacs is the most convoluted
I can remember. There were worse editors, but none that I can remember
that used such complicated command syntax. I used to use pico for
quick edits, and vi for all the tricky stuff, but since nedit can do
both and all the machine I work with have enough power and bandwidth
to run nedit over ssh forwarded X, it is what I prefer, but sometimes
I still use vi, for quick jobs.
For newbies who are patient and have lots of time, emacs would be a
good thing to learn. If you are looking for an easy to use powerful
text editor nedit is great and has many more features than gedit.

kile (it's either in extras or core). I think Bluefish can
do syntax highlighting, but none of the useful "insert
figure" type operations.
