Hello,
Today I tried to access an online tutorial for a product that we are using. I found that I could not access the multimedia files or download them as expected.
In Mozilla I kept getting and error about an unrecognized protocol.
The link was similar to this.
mss://www.someserver.com/multimedia/thisfile.wmv
The protocol error was related to the mss://
I have searched for any information on this protocol with no success and I need to find out if this is one of those strange MS only things. I think it has to do with streaming the video or data but not sure.

Try opening the link in a video player like totem.

That's not going to work unless she installs the Windows Media codecs. Try the mplayer site for more info on how to get that working
some mms:// files dont let you download them, thats the policy of some mm content providers...
however, if downloading is allowed, id try to stream it into a file, either by mencoder, ffmpeg or by xmms, or which other clients do support that tech...

First, honest mistake, not all Robins are girls. My wife would be in for a shock. :) Of course I know a few and I still get mail addressed to Ms. Mrs. etc.
I have the codecs installed and tried to open them in mplayer by using the url. It didn't want to work. I will play with it some more.
I would like to have them open with either mplayer plugin or something within mozilla. I was looking for the mime type to do this as well. It would be easier as these are part of a bigger package and the links are provided as part of the lesson.
I may have dones something wrong as it was close to the end of the working day.
I will give the various tools a try with the URL as I have some time today.
I did take the time to email the providers of the packages and complain as one of the software packages that I am trying to learn is Linux based.

Well I tried videolan client, xine and mplayer but none would work. I didn't get any messages from any of the links.
mplayer mms://trog.ni.com/ni/webevents/lv/lv_datastorage_fast.wmv xine mms://trog.ni.com/ni/webevents/lv/lv_datastorage_fast.wmv
Now I don't know if I have an issue with firewalls or serverside restrictions. At least xine gave me a message that xine failed to open the mrl.
More testing.

Sorry bout that, Robin - I've had indifferent success with mplayer and the codecs, but I have gotten them to work. The results can be a bit frustrating because they don't always work - suppose it's version dependent or something. I've always done it in conjunction with Kaffeine, but that's not the only way, according to what I've read.

I work with video at home and work and have mostly great success with mplayer. The only issue I have had is with damaged files that won't play. The files will in many cases play in xine though.
I am going to try to with a (yuck) windows machine to see if there is a firewall issue on the corporate network or server side restrictions.

You could always make a .asp file and open that with xine or mplayer Contents would be something like: <ASX Version="3">
<TITLE> a title </Title>
<ENTRY> <REF HREF="mms://trog.ni.com/ni/webevents/lv/lv_datastorage_fast.wmv"/> </ENTRY> </ASX>
This usually works, I haven't tried it yet, but maybe it works
