Hello,
I am looking for a way to set up PPTP on F14. I did it long time ago on a different machine back in F6 and it has been working all the way to F14. The tool there opens a dialog box. Unfortunately, I have no access to that other machine right now.
The only information I have is the IP of the PPTP server, and my account information consisting of username, domain and password. The maintainer of the PPTP server says the rest will be provided automatically by DHCP. I tried on SUSE with tools like pptpsetup and pptp-command, but these tools are poorly documanted and to me entirely incomprehensible. For example, they ask for CHAP secrets and routing, which I have no idea about. So I installed Fedora 14, thinking that it would be easier. But now I can't find the tool I was using on the other machine.
What tools can you recommend? Thanks!
Take care Oliver

Perhaps try: su -c 'yum install NetworkManager-pptp'
Then add it using NetworkManager?

It is already installed.

How do I do that?
On the other machine that I don't have access right now (which happens to be a laptop), there is a NetworkManager icon in the upper right corner, on the menu bar. Plus, there is a menu item to start or setup PPTP (I think it was under Applications - Internet). None of these are on this machine.
When I open a root shell and type "nm-applet", I get:
** (nm-applet:8905): WARNING **: <WARN> bus_init(): Could not get the session bus. Make sure the message bus daemon is running! Message: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
** GLib-GIO:ERROR:gdbusconnection.c:2270:initable_init: assertion failed: (connection->initialization_error == NULL)
I actually had a similar message all the time with SUSE-Linux, which was the reason I installed Fedora. I thought the D-Bus was a KDE thing I would not see with Gnome.
Take care Oliver

Hmm.. make sure that the NetworkManager service started and the network service stopped? You can use the Services tool to check. When you start it, the icon should appear..

Thanks, I stopped network and restarted NetworkManager, and the NetworkManager icon came back. It even seems to have a simple way to set up PPTP.
Only: So far the connection always fails, and it does not give me any details about what it tried to do and how it failed. So I can't even tell whether it could not reach the server, or whether the password was wrong, or whether something else was misconfigured. Is there a way to get any such details from NetworkManager?
Take care Oliver

Solved it. I had forgotten to turn on encryption. Now it connects.

Above means your pptp side is actually talking to the other pptp side.

Above means pptp wants to use "ppp" to manage the data transfer.
LCP is part of part of "ppp" negotiation to set up the ppp connection. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Link_Control_Protocol
I'd like to know the reason LCP terminated by peer. What is
(gM-@Dq^@<M-Mt^@^@^BM-3)
The above is the reason LCP was terminated...I have no idea what this is.
I tried a google search: pptp "lcp terminated by peer" I found the following website...not sure if it will still be helpful: http://pptpclient.sourceforge.net/howto-diagnosis.phtml
I saw, "LCP terminated by peer (garbled text)" on this webpage: http://pptpclient.sourceforge.net/howto-diagnosis.phtml#lcp_term_garbled It says, "LCP terminated by peer (garbled text) Your pppd could not negotiate encryption. Enable debug logging, try the connection again, and look for rejection packets just prior to this message. Decide what to do based on the rejection packets.
See the next two sections below for the most likely causes."
I suggest going to this website, try what it suggests, especially the part about enable debug logging to find out why ppp is unhappy, and let us know what you find. If this website solves your problem, please tell us so others know the solution if they also run into this problem.

I tried NetworkManager-pptp to connect to a VPN server but without luck. I incidentally found a linux client SSL VPN client. It works very well. not this is of help to you.
have a look at
