Dear All
I am trying to install F7, but the process seems deadlocked when
"Loading pata_it821x driver".
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Paul

In addition, I have just checked that my F7 dvd is well recorded, since the sha1sums match. Since the installation dvd will never be changed, will I have to wait for F8 to see this nasty problem solved?

Paul,
Sometimes you have to be patient. The same thing happened to me with the F 7 Test 2 DVD. The process appeared to hang and asking for pata_amd. I got a kernel panic and I thought to myself, this is doomed. I left it for a while came back and the installation was successful. Give it some time, go burn some time come back and hopefully it goes through, if it does not work, please report back.
Regards,
Antonio

Thanks, Antonio. I have been patient and I have tried to install F7 a dozen of times at different moments, but the reported problem persists. An installation dvd that does not install anything is an useless installation dvd. I was not expecting such a thing from Fedora, to be honest.

Could someone please tell me in which component in Bugzilla I should report this crucial bug?

Now, I will join your club Paul. I cannot install Fedora 7 on one of my computers. Which component of bugzilla? Anaconda?
Regards,
Antonio

Thanks, Alan. Since I did not know precisely in which component to report this bug in Bugzilla, I reported it in the Anaconda component:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=242229
Maybe, you could move it to the Kernel component, could not you?

FWIW, I just installed F7 on an old system that I'm using as a firewall/router. The install hung after the pata drivers were loaded, and the solution was to boot with acpi=off. The system was running FC5, and didn't require the acpi=off parameter to install and run under FC5.

When you update your system via "Add/Remove Programs" in F7, when adding programs, the installation archives are downloaded and then installed.
To where on the filesystem are they downloaded prior to installation?
I've checked /tmp and /var/spool and haven't found anywhere that's likely.
Are the installation archives automatically deleted after installation?

/var/cache/yum

Yes though that is configurable in /etc/yum.conf

Good evening, Rahul.
Thank you for the information. I was able to find the downloaded packages in /var/cache/yum/fedora/packages, with a few files showing up in /var/cache/yum/updates/packages.
/etc/yum.conf contains "keepcache=0", which I assume means "delete the packages when done"; however, at the end of installation there are many, many files remaining in that directory... currently 556 files (mostly or all rpm's), total size around 440 megabytes.
Two questions... Why do you suppose they didn't get deleted?, and Can I just delete them with "rm *" and free up some space?
Thanks...

You probably will want to use "yum clean packages" to remove them - that way you do not have to go to each repo's directory to get rid of them.
Mikkel.

Have you tried a network install using either the Rescue CD or the DVD? If you want F7 that badly now is a good time to learn.

Thanks, Kam. Is it complicated to do a network install? Is there some place where from one can obtain the instructions for doing a network installation?

It's not that difficult. You need to first locate a F7 mirror and the /fedora/releases/7/Fedora/i386/os directory. Put in either the F7 Rescue CD or DVD and enter "linux askmethod" on the after the system boots. Depending on the URL of the mirror select either HTTP or FTP and enter the data requested on the screen. Here's a write up using FC-6 is still applies to F7:

Thanks, Kam, but when I try to run the rescue mode from the F7 installation dvd, I get again the same deadlock problem:
"Loading pata_it821x driver".
Thus, a network install seems not possible here.

Did a little google search. These links may help you with your driver problem:

http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-bugs/2007-04/msg00978.html
The SUSE folks seem to think passing 'brokenmodules=it821x' or 'brokenmodules=it821x, pata_it821x' might work with the DVD install.

I was meanwhile able to successfully install F7 with yum, as described in:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/YumUpgradeFaq
In order to have F7 booting, I had to switch (in grub) to the previous kernel.

If you want to minimize the amount of yum downloads, then use yum-presto. For details, consult:
