Hi; I have read and reread.... all kinds of info on mplayer codecs. Simple question(s). 1) WHERE do I install the codec(s)? Is it just a matter of a file copy? 2) WHICH codec do I need for wmv, avi, and mpeg files? (The mplayer site lists all kinds of details on so many codecs! But no info for a newbie.) 3) Do I *need* to involve Firefox in the mix?
This, on FC5 32-bit, 2ghz machine.
Thanks in advance. -nat

Doesn't this leave you with two copies of the codec files, one under /usr/local and one under /usr. Why do you want that?
There are codec rpms on the mplayer site that can save you this trouble.
http://rpm.greysector.net/mplayer/
Follow the link on the left side where it says "CVS" versions. On my system, I'm running:
$ rpm -qa | grep mplayer mplayer-gui-1.0pre7-1
mplayer-codecs-20050412-1 mplayer-1.0pre7-1 mplayer-codecs-extra-20050412-1 mplayer-font-iso1-1.1-1 mplayer-skin-default-1.4-1
The codec rpm drops the codec files into:
/usr/lib/codecs
I also have this related one from a separate site
mplayerplug-in-3.11-fc4
The mplayer-plugin is a big help, because if you have it, most of the commercial streaming video sites will work. I watched CBS NCAA basketball the last two weekends on cbs.com.

Nat: download either the all-codecs or the required-codecs packages from mplayer-hq. Make the directory /usr/local/lib/win32 and using either the tar command or the archive tool extract the files to that directory.
That should be all you need.

I can use yum to automate *all* aspects of mplayer?? Since I always have problems with the livna repo I used freshrpms, but I didn't realize I can also yum the codecs. My cmdline buffer shows I did: #yum install mplayer # yum install mplayerplug-in mplayer-skins Then I came here to find out about the codecs. So, what now? Thanks nat

Because in the past others have reported problems with either Xine and / or Mplayer having trouble accessing the codecs via a symbolic link rather than directly. It seems to be more reliable this way.

Yes it is possible but you have to also run 32 bit version of Mplayer. (The codecs are 32 bit.) 32 bit Mplayer runs just fine on x86_64. Just use the instructions at http://stanton-finley.net/fedora_core_5_installation_notes.html.

Hey,
the only parameter you have to give is the filename of the movie you wanna watch: mplayer moviename.mpg -> thats all....
why not using mplayer in the gui? you can open it should be soemewhere in the multimedia section of gnome...it doesnt seem that you installed the gui... yum -y install mplayer-gui, this should make it available in gnome too...

I haven't had to do so. "mplayer something.avi" "mplayer something.mpg" "mplayer something.mov" have all worked just as simply as that.
Third, its not part of the gui any longer; can't right-click and choose 'play in mplayer'.
There should also be some sort of mplayer-gui package (or command, it might be included in the base package). I haven't installed mplayer the way that you did, though; but it works in the same way once installed.

Ok. It works via 'mplayer <filename>' and that includes avi files (something that didn't work before for me).
However, I am having gui problems. Besides not appearing in the right-click menu, entering just 'mplayer' should bring up a gui. yum is having a problem installing the gui: ------------------- Running Transaction Test Finished Transaction Test Transaction Test Succeeded Running Transaction Installing: mplayer-gui ######################### [1/1] error: unpacking of archive failed on file /usr/share/mplayer/Skin/default: cpio : rename

Third, its not part of the gui any longer; can't right-click and choose 'play in mplayer'.
There should also be some sort of mplayer-gui package (or command, it might be included in the base package). I haven't installed mplayer the way that you did, though; but it works in the same way once installed.
Hey,
the only parameter you have to give is the filename of the movie you wanna watch: mplayer moviename.mpg -> thats all....
why not using mplayer in the gui? you can open it should be soemewhere in the multimedia section of gnome...it doesnt seem that you installed the gui... yum -y install mplayer-gui, this should make it available in
gnome too...
Ok. It works via 'mplayer <filename>' and that includes avi files (something that didn't work before for me).
However, I am having gui problems. Besides not appearing in the right-click menu, entering just 'mplayer' should bring up a gui. yum is having a problem installing the gui:
Running Transaction Test Finished Transaction Test Transaction Test Succeeded Running Transaction Installing: mplayer-gui ######################### [1/1] error: unpacking of archive failed on file /usr/share/mplayer/Skin/default: cpio : rename

or a conflict. lets make mplayer unusable.
1) uninstall mplayer skins using rpm -e mplayer-skins[Version] 2) do 'updatedb' 3) locate mplayer 4) find the directory within mplayer, that still has some Skin-Files in. Delete this directory 5) re-install mplayer-skins via yum.
...seems that lots of fiddling corrupted mplayer...

You can find out how if you goggle search mplayer and goto their site. I installed their latest rpm, then downloaded the complete codex package and followed the instructions to install them. Next, I dnloaded some fonts and followed their install instructions, to the tee. It works better than it did with FC4.
But I prefer to use yum for it, in order to automate future upgrades.
Sometimes the FC team has a very full plate, like right now. So, I just grab the latest and install it and then sit back to actually enjoy using it. At some point, it'll get included in extras and yum will update it.
And yum has the problem noted above in my previous post.

Well, I am trying to overcome both! (as evident by this thread!)
Now, in order to take this route (first I need to be convinced that yum will update it in the future) I will need to 'yum remove mplayer*'? Will that clean what all that yum did?
Thanks, nat. ps. I kept away on April 1. Was afraid someone will pull a trick on my poor soul.

Yum will try to update anything that has been installed as an rpm. It uses the rpm database to identify what is installed.
Really, all I had to do was goto: http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html install one rpm, the Redhat/Fedora one
I only see fedora 3 and 4 pkgs.
Do you have the fedora-release package installed? I assume since you make this statement you probably have FC5, and may have done an install as an upgrade.
notice where it says in small print that the 'installation documentation' (that is a link that you can click on... using the mouse, it's highlighted)
Neat, didn't notice that [it's a link] before.
Now.. http://www1.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/design7/codecs.html download the 'complete codex' (referenced on this page as 'all') open a terminal window as root, where you dnloaded the file to: bunzip2 completecodex.bz2 --that will bunzip the file to a 'tar-file' tar -xvf completecodex.tar (whatever it gets named to...) cd into the directory it made. type: more README --read what it sez cp * /usr/local/lib/win32 (create that directory if you don't have it using "mkdir /usr/local/lib/win32" ) then! to make sure that other apps or updated fedora rpms of mplayer could find them... ln -s /usr/local/lib/win32 /usr/lib/win32 ln -s /usr/local/lib/win32 /usr/local/lib/codecs now mplayer will find either of the three, now you are more yum-proof.
do the same thing with the skins... just get what you need from their site and enjoy it now. Follow their instructions first, they worked just fine for me. Hope this helps you some. Ric

Well, I am trying to overcome both! (as evident by this thread!)
Now, in order to take this route (first I need to be convinced that yum will update it in the future) I will need to 'yum remove mplayer*'? Will that clean what all that yum did?
Yum being able to do the update is a configuration issue. You need to have the appropriate repo enabled and yum can then use it to search/update anything that has been installed.

It does get confused based on the packaging of the rpm's. It once *deleted* [active!] mySql from my system.

You mean the yum repo for fedora-release? I have three fedora repos enabled: 1)fedora-core, 2)fedora-updates, 3)fedora-extras. I also have the livna repo enabled. By the way, Livna changed their entire naming scheme for FC5 so not to clash with other repos.
I assume since you make this statement you probably have FC5, and may have done an install as an upgrade.
Yes. I installed as an upgrade fc5 over fc4. But I miss the point.
Thanks nat

rpm -e mplayer would do it. But, as the mplayer rpm at their website sez, it's for RedHat and Fedora. Whether that is accurate or not is beyond me. It works, I use it with great satisfaction and I choose to do it that way. But, a walk on the wild side, a daily dose of larceny, or cheating on your taxes, keeps life just marching along. Hence my handle "Wayward4now" <cackles> Ric
