Hello all! I'm new to linux and can't seem to find a real beginners guide anywhere, so I joined this list to see if I could get some help. I just installed FC1 and am wondering how to update it to FC3. I'm hoping that I won't have to burn the .isos and reinstall everything again. I've been on windows forever and have no real clue how to do anything in linux. It took me two hours to figure out how to run up2date. Any help/guidance will be kindly accepted.
Hello: Welcome to the list, this is a great list with a lot of smart people. You might try looking through the list archives for terms like 'newb' or 'newbie' or 'installation' . There is a lot of the same ground that we go over with people, not that people aren't willing to help, but fyi since seeing the posts will teach you a heck of a lot.
Good news: you installed FC1 successfully! That's great! Personally I don't normally do updates across versions, because I like to get a fresh 'clean' install at the baseline of the FCx number each release time, but that is just my personal preference. If you really want to go FC1 to FC3, I am sure someone on this list will likely help you with that. In my opinion it is just a heck of a lot easier to do a fresh install. The installation process alone will teach you a zillion things; in my opinion it is really worth it to reinstall for that reason alone.
Google a lot. In fact, try www.google.com/linux for your searches as you already have much ot the territory cut down for you. Redhat.com has a TON of guides to all sorts of topics - you should be able to find docs, howto papers, etc. as you go forth. A lot of them are advanced but there is some good introductory material if you look around enough. Linuxmigration.com has some good introductory info <along with pictures> which I found very useful. Also linuxhomenetworking.com is another good one. You will find more in the archives. Hopefully that will keep you busy for awhile.
Hope that helps Marc

---- does up2date still work with FC-1 now that it has been transferred to fedora-legacy? I'm sure that to use it, you would have to change your sources at the very least.
There is a way to do dist-upgrade with yum or apt - there are varying levels of success with that procedure and it certainly isn't officially supported by fedora.org
FC-2 and FC-3 use the 2.6.x kernels and thus, quite a bit has changed since FC-1 - if you are antsy, I would suggest that you download the i386 iso's and install (upgrade) from the CD's. I would expect that FC-4 is still 2-3 months away yet.

According to the preliminary FC4 schedule, FC4 GA will be approximately May 16.

Another site which is good to start with is http://www.fedorafaq.org/ lots of basic questions answered.
Good worj getting this far - you'll really get to appreciate how much more 'in control' you are with linux. I've switched nearly completely just by fiddling over the last two months.
cheers, Duncan
