What should be its function? Blocking of pop-ups in the Browser? Some browser support it per Default.
Hi,

Don't need it with Mozilla 1.6 and Firefox (or whatever it's called now). Edit->Preferences->Privacy & Security->Popup Windows
et voila!

He's talking about that messaging software that used to come with Windows.

Sorry paul as I said it is a confusing name for the util in todays world. the popup is not for blocking popups but rather sending messages on the network internally from one system to another. We use real popup and winpopup on the production line [running win] for updating staff with instructions. I run FC1 currently. This is faster and more effient [in our case] than email. While the employee is working we send a popup which apears in a small text block on his screen. You get some really fancy ones to like 4C-Softs SuperPOPup. But I am looking for linux a simple and small tool to do the job.

Samba! To send a message: echo "your message" | smbclient -M RecipientsMachine More comfortable with this little script called winpopup.sh
#!/bin/bash machine=$1 shift echo $@ | smbclient -U $USER -M $machine
Then you can do # winpopup.sh Recipient Hi there?

Try linpopup (GTk+) or linpopup2 (GTK+2; http://sourceforge.net/projects/linpopup2/) If you are using KDE try Popper (http://sourceforge.net/projects/kpopper/) or kpopup (http://freshmeat.net/projects/kpopup/)
If you are a console user look at smbwatch (http://sourceforge.net/projects/smbwatch/)
Or you can write a script yourself, look at: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/samba/chapter/book/ch08_04.html
Christoph
try "man smbclient" search for "-M"

If writing a script, you certainly don't require samba. Just apache, wget, bash and then something pre-made or otherwise to open a box (eg Xdialog).

Th OP wanted a tool "that is compatible with with realpopup and winpopup". How to do that without samba?

Yes, you are right. The link is only to explain how to setup xterm or whatever (I suggest zenity) to display the messages received.

I recommend notifying whoever does these messages that Microsoft may removing the Windows Messenger Service from future versions of Windows because of the problems users get from people spamming them over the internet.
It is kind of off topic I know, but just felt like letting you know.
