Hello Everyone,
I have a rocketraid 1740 controller that I want to use in a soon to be
installed Fedora 7 system. Highpoint's website doesn't have any Fedora
7 drivers, but they do provide a package that will let end users build
the rr1740x module for any 2.4 or 2.6 series kernel.
How would one build the rr1740x module for Fedora 7 if one doesn't have
a Fedora 7 system to build the driver on? Can I install the
kernel-devel package from Fedora 7 on a Fedora 6 host, and build the
module that way? Should I use a Fedora 7 virtual machine (e.g. vmware,
xen, etc.)?

I was going to use the card with three SATA II drives to create a 1 TB
RAID 5 array, and install Fedora 7 on it. But, then I thought that if
the card driver wasn't in the kernel, I would have to rebuild it with
each kernel upgrade, including inserting it into the initrd - big pain
in the ass.
Soooo, I've been considering using an IDE drive as the boot/OS drive,
and the RAID array for data to make everything simpler (no need to put
the module into the initrd with each new kernel upgrade).

I would expect the AHCI driver to handle it. Although I can't guarantee
that is the case without tyring it.

As I suspected, Fedora 7 didn't detect the rocketraid 1740, so either
Fedora doesn't ship a kernel with the needed module, or Highpoint hasn't
got the driver into Linux yet. The driver might be proprietary too - I
don't know.
Well, this makes things about 10x harder. Now I have to figure out how
to build the damn module with a Fedora 7 machine.

Unfortunately, that would have been the smart thing to do, so I didn't
do it. :( I ripped out all the old PATA drives and installed the SATA
II drives, thinking that I could somehow get the driver installed during
the Fedora 7 install.

The rocketraid modules I did find in the kernel didn't work with the
1740 I have.
I managed to install a fourth drive in the case, so now I'm using a 20
GB PATA drive for the boot / OS drive. I then built the 1740 driver and
inserted into the running kernel. The 1740 driver is definitely
proprietary:

Can you email me an lspci -vvxxx of the system now you've got it running.
Chances are that the marvell driver (sata_mv or ahci) just needs a new
PCI identifier to replace the entire rr174x stuff

BTW, I tried sata_mv, but that didn't work. Only the proprietary rr174x

Is this RocketRaid 1740 supported in Fedora 7 or 8 now?
The chip is supported by the latest kernels (it's a Marvell chip with a
different PCI identifier). The Marvell driver itself is still a bit iffy
with the newest chips but the 1740 ought to work reasonably now.
I'm not however sure if 1740 support made the FC8 discs.
