OK, I can't figure out how to start X in Fedora Core 3. I've got xfce installed. I tried "startx", "X", "xinit". None are found. I tried Alt-F7 but get a blank screen. Any ideas?
Thanks, Lyle

To which runlevel do you boot? Is there a /var/log/Xorg.0.log file with valuable information? Do you see X in the process list from "ps axuw"? Else hardware information is needed too.
Alexander
Thanks, I was starting in runlevel 3. I changed it to 5. Now it boots up with this prompt:
Fedora Core release 3 (Heidelberg) Kernel 2.6.9-1.667 on an i586
INIT: Id "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
Again, nothing if I press Alt-F7. Any more ideas?
I also noticed that the link /etc/X11/X -> ../../usr/X11R6/bin/Xorg is broken. Am I missing something? Is there a log file to check for errors?
Thanks, Lyle

Hm, I doubt you see a broken link.
ls -al /etc/X11/X /usr/X11R6/bin/Xorg
What does that command show you? Do you think it is "broken" because /usr/X11R6/bin/Xorg is displayed with red background? This is because the binary has "chmod u+s" set.
I did write you took look into /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

And tour the cathedral and the bazaar, and "Smart Questions", while in the neighborhood. Might take a while to get back. :-)

Might also go back to runlevel 3 and give
# system-config-display --reconfig
a shot. If playing with that fails, post the info Alexander requested.

Gotcha. Thanks for pointing that out.

When I type 'ls -al /etc/X11/X /usr/X11R6/bin/Xorg', both '/etc/X11/X' and '../../usr/X11R6/bin/Xorg' are flashing with a red background. There is no file '/usr/X11R6/bin/Xorg'. Neither is there a log file, '/var/log/Xorg.0.log'.
I wonder if I am missing some packages? When I ran through the Fedora install, I selected XFCE but not X Basic. Since then I've installed a few other RPMS, but it hasn't helped.
Thanks, Lyle

A bit curious as installing a window manager the underlying X should be installed too as a dependency. You may run on console
yum install xorg-x11
to get X.

When I type
yum install xorg-x11
I get:
You have enabled checking of packages via GPG keys. This is a good thing. However, you do not have any GPG public keys installed. You need to download the keys for packages you wish to install and install them. You can do that by running the command: rpm --import public.gpg.key For more information contact your distribution or package provider.
So, I typed
rpm --import public.gpg.key
and got
error: public.gpg.key: import read failed.
My network interface is working fine. How can I either a) turn of checking of packages via GPG keys, or b) import the GPG key?
Thanks, Lyle

Very basic issue: how should the key be installed if you don't give the proper path to the key file?

Is xorg-x11 installed? Maybe the X server is not present. I'm thinking that you have a window manager and no server. This is probably not the case, but worth a guess.

I've installed the following packages:
xorg-x11-font-utils-6.8.1-12.i386.rpm xorg-x11-libs-6.8.1-12.i386.rpm xorg-x11-Mesa-libGL-6.8.1-12.i386.rpm xorg-x11-Mesa-libGLU-6.8.1-12.i386.rpm xorg-x11-twm-6.8.1-12.i386.rpm xorg-x11-xauth-6.81-12.i386.rpm xorg-x11-xfs-6.8.1-12.i386.rpm
Are there any others that might help? Only "libs" sounds like it is critical.
Thanks, Lyle

I have the below packages installed that relate to xorg-x11. Usually the updating programs (yum, up2date or apt) pull in any programs needed, because of dependacies for other programs.
If I recall some installation programs, it is possible to only install the windowmanager and not the X server. You do need either XFree86 or xorg-x11. The lack of deps might be because you could choose whatever X server version that you choose.
My listing for xorg-x11 is probably a bit more up2date. I just upgraded the xorg-x11 recently, while reading the mail.

Having finally gotten all those packages to install (I didn't worry about the devel or Mesa ones), X now starts on boot! I just have one problem - the mouse doesn't work. I'm going to post a new thread about it because it seems like a different issue.
Thanks to all who helped.
