DVD choppy

I believe not having DMA enabled on the dvd drive can cause this. On my Dell I have hdc=noprobe in the kernel parameters in grub.conf. That seems to be enough to keep the drive working nicely.

What player? What video mode are you using? Do you have hardware acceleration working? What video driver?

It is an Intel 945GM Chipset (according to the dmesg log posted).

I'm having problems in all players: Kplayer (based on mplayer), kaffiene, and I think Noatun (I can't get past the menu selection on Noatun). However, I just checked vlc and it works fine. I'd still like to fix kplayer, though.

Are you launching it from a menu item or a command line? If you are using a menu item, try using the command line and see if any interesting error messages get printed. Maybe you have something misconfigured and it is just being slow instead of erroring out.

Besides the ATA DMA stuff, you may also want to check whether your MTRR is being set properly by the xorg X server.

Mine looks like this:

cat /proc/mtrr reg00: base=0x00100000 ( 1MB), size= 256MB: write-back, count=1 reg01: base=0xfc000000 (4032MB), size= 32MB: write-combining, count=1

You should have at least one "write-combining" entry which means the graphics card is set properly. Otherwise, performance can drop dramatically.

Would mean his DVD-RW drive is actually sr0 right?

Would this mean the line you guys gave him for his grub boot is even valid?

Yeah, it doesn't look like the noprobe has the same effect as it does for me. Perhaps Dotan's dvd drive is not connected in the same order as mine is my Dell E1705.

Before I added the noprobe, anytime I'd use the drive (to read data, play a cd or dvd, etc) the entire system would get dreadfully sluggish. I'm not sure if that is really the problem that Dotan's got or not. He said in one post that dvd playback worked well with VLC, so the issue he's having may well just be video related.

I'm far from expert enough to know. I was only aiming at the low-hanging fruit thinking that the solution that I dug around to find when I got my laptop might just be the same for his Dell. :)

Kplayer now refuses to play the disk. When launching kplayer I noticed something strange: When opening the FIle drive with no disk in the drive Kplayer usually has a menu item "DVD Device" and when there is a disk that same menu item changes to the name of the disk. Now, that menu item is rapidly changing from "DVD Device" to "Black Hawk" (or the name of whatever disk I'm trying to play). For comparison, I put another known-good disk in, and Kaffeine played the first 20 seconds, then complained that it "could not read from the original". It was choppy during this time. Nothing was reported on the command line, however, that wasn't when trying the first disk. Kplayer did the same name-switching game that it did with the first disk (again with no console output), and vlc played fine.

Thanks. I've nothing in /proc/mtrr:

However, I'm having a hard time starting X, as it's already running! I've combed the logs in /var/logs but I don't have those lines. When I kill X with CTRL-ALT-ESC it starts right back up automatically, not letting me redirect it's output to a file.

I have reason to believe that the DVD drive is actually at /dev/scd0. Would I risk doing harm by changing hdc=noprobe to scd0=noprobe or sr0=noprobe?

Also, I tried verifying the location of the DVD drive in /etc/fstab, but it's not a conventional fstab like I'm used to with the drive letters and such. It's what is called LVM, no?

I'm having problems in all players: Kplayer (based on mplayer), kaffiene, and I think Noatun (I can't get past the menu selection on Noatun). However, I just checked vlc and it works fine. I'd still like to fix kplayer, though.

Are you launching it from a menu item or a command line? If you are using a menu item, try using the command line and see if any interesting error messages get printed. Maybe you have something misconfigured and it is just being slow instead of erroring out.

Kplayer now refuses to play the disk. When launching kplayer I noticed something strange: When opening the FIle drive with no disk in the drive Kplayer usually has a menu item "DVD Device" and when there is a disk that same menu item changes to the name of the disk. Now, that menu item is rapidly changing from "DVD Device" to "Black Hawk" (or the name of whatever disk I'm trying to play). For comparison, I put another known-good disk in, and Kaffeine played the first 20 seconds, then complained that it "could not read from the original". It was choppy during this time. Nothing was reported on the command line, however, that wasn't when trying the first disk. Kplayer did the same name-switching game that it did with the first disk (again with no console output), and vlc played fine.

No. LVM is logical volumes, generally on hard drives. They can be on other things, but won't be a part of anything to do with DVD-video.

When the drive is treated as a SATA device I don't think you can get DMA enabled properly. That's what the hdc=noprobe is for, though in your case the hdc part must need adjusted if your drive isn't connected the same way as mine is, for example. The link that Kevin posted to the fedoraforum.org posting is another method that should achieve a similar thing AFAIK. When I installed FC5 on my laptop I messed around with various methods and the noprobe was the simplest one that worked for me.

To be sure that you are even having the same problem, does any reading from your dvd drive (data, cd, dvd) cause your system to become sluggish? For me, without the noprobe my mouse pointer will stutter across the screen when I'm reading something from the dvd drive.

No, the machine does not get sluggish. Then again, it's got a DuoCore2 processor and 2GB of RAM, so it'll take quite a bit to make it sluggish. Lets just say that Open Office, not preloaded, opens jsut as fast as the splash screen disappears :)

I've only got a CoreDuo and 1GB of memory here. I'm not at all sure you've got the same problem that I had. I'd try to follow up on Alan and Dexter's hints. Good luck.

My thoughts, Kaffine & Kplayer bork but vlc works this to me would indicate a player problem & not hardware as your box has plenty o' "beef" but saying that and taking alan's jaded memory into account :-) this line reg02: from /proc/mtrr don't look right to me the size=16MB should be 256MB representing physical video ram. ??? I had an issue similar to this on my Toshiba Laptop. I ordered it under the impression that the drives were all IDE as SATA support was not that great at the time. Both my HD and DVD drives came up as SATA devices even though the information stated both were IDE from the web.

Now the issue was traced to the BIOS but there were no changes allowed in the BIOS for this. I had to set a kernel flag (cannot remember and the laptop is not here) for the pata support to work properly.

I traced it through the ICH6 {?} controller information.

Sorry I cannot provide a deeper answer.

However, I'm having a hard time starting X, as it's already running! I've combed the logs in /var/logs but I don't have those lines. When I kill X with CTRL-ALT-ESC it starts right back up automatically, not letting me redirect it's output to a file.
