Red Hat 9 to FC2 and email

Hi peoples,

I just installed FC2 onto my system which was running Redhat 9.0 (RH9)

On the RH9 system I used to serve some users e-mail accounts using pop3.
As these were casual Windows users, I'd run fetchmail to collect their
e-mail from the ISP and then their e-mail would wait in
/var/spool/mail/user_name until they checked their e-mail from their
Windows PC. Their PC's would send their e-mail directly to the ISP's
smtp server so I didn't configure sendmail or postfix.

With the change to my system to FC2, I discovered that pop3 is now
managed by the Cyrus IMAP mailer system. I worked out how to create
their mailboxes and login via cyrus but I am at a loss to find out how
to
	a. Convert their existing /var/spool/mail/xxx mailboxes
	to the Cyrus system
and
	b. Given they are casual users, I want to still use
	fetchmail to get their mail off the ISPs' system, so
	how do I get any new mail into the Cyrus system

Hi Again,

Well a little bit more reading and I have solved my b. problem - rather
than playing around with sendmail - oh for a GUI interface to
sendmail!!!! - I switched to the postfix MTA and made the simple change
- all new e-mail is delivered to the Cyrus IMAP system.

My question is now, how do I convert outstanding e-mail in
/var/spool/mail?

The step would have been as simple using Sendmail. but your decision...

Cyrus-IMAPd comes with tools to convert. I think it is in the
cyrus-imapd-utils package. A different way would be to use formail.

OK, I backed out Cyrus IMAP and went to dovecot.

Trouble is when I attempt to get the mail from a Windows box, maillog
shows

You need to edit dovecot.conf and change the path to the INBOX.

Well, I changed /etc/dovecot.conf to have

default_mail_env = mbox:~/mail/:INBOX=/var/spool/mail/%u

and unfortunately I get the same problem ...

The directories seem ok

# ls -ld /var/spool/mail

I then changed /etc/dovecot.conf to have
	mbox_locks = fcntl
rather than the default (which I believe is dotlock fcntl) and lo and
behold, I could pick up the e-mail.

I'm relatively happy now, but I'd love to know why dotlock locking
doesn't work. Does some service other than dovecot need to be
started/configured?

Erase the Cyrus-IMAPd and install dovecot. Cyrus-IMAPd shouldn't be
installed during an upgrade like with a fresh new install dovecot is the
default mail server. dovecot can use the same spool directory and mbox
format as the obsolete uw-imapd.
