Hello, My K3B suddenly can't burn DVD anymore. Whenever I tried to burn DVD, it complained that it couldn't find media in /dev/hdc (although the DVD+R is there) and asked me to insert an "empty of appendable Double layer DVD+-R".
Why does it do that ? and why it asked me for a double layer media ? my data is < 4GB. When this happens, I suddenly get this in my /var/log/message:
Mar 20 08:18:36 defiant kernel: hdc: packet command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } Mar 20 08:18:36 defiant kernel: hdc: packet command error: error=0x40 { LastFailedSense=0x04 } Mar 20 08:18:36 defiant kernel: ide: failed opcode was: unknown Mar 20 08:18:36 defiant kernel: ATAPI device hdc: Mar 20 08:18:36 defiant kernel: Error: Hardware error -- (Sense key=0x04) Mar 20 08:18:36 defiant kernel: Tracking servo failure -- (asc=0x09, ascq=0x01) Mar 20 08:18:36 defiant kernel: The failed "Read Cd/Dvd Capacity" packet command was: Mar 20 08:18:36 defiant kernel: "25 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 "
I am not so sure if this is a device failure. Two days ago I could burn DVD just fine. Just now, I tried to burn CD with the same device and it worked fine.
Any help ?
Thank you in advance. RDB

It seems that growisofs (which is used by K3B) is having problem writing to my device too:
$> growisofs -dvd-compat -Z /dev/dvd=file_test.iso Error trying to open /dev/dvd exclusively ... retrying in 1 second. :-[ READ DISC INFORMATION failed with SK=4h/ASC=09h/ACQ=01h]: Input/output error
Same error message in /var/log/message. Hm...

Looks at a glance like your drive has died. Given the low cost of hardware these days, your best bet is probably to simply replace it. My dvd drive recently gave up the ghost after only 15 only months, replacement cost €49. I know, it isn't environmentally friendly but what can you do?...

Hi all Is there any one who has installed successully FC4 on his TOSHIBA laptop. is there any problem. I got only the first interface then the system blocks even when I boot with linux text (textual mode installation). Thank you for help Adel
Hello Adel, I ran FC4 on a M70 and upgraded now to FC5 with no significant problem. what I remember though from the FC4 install was a bug in theinstallation procedure which resulted in a message like "kernel panic" or so. Is this the message you get?
