I would try turning off the yum-updatesd service.

Try looking at:
/etc/yum/yum-updatesd.conf

1. (Menu) > System > Services (this will start the system-config-services GUI)
2. uncheck the service called 'yum-updatesd'
3 you may also stop it immediately
4. save your changes then close the program
