In gimp I'm missing the File/Create option to pull an image from a scanner. Google results mention the xsane-gimp package, but dnf in F42 knows nothing about it.
I did find /usr/share/sane/xsane/doc/sane-xsane-gimp-doc.html that tells me to manually create a symbolic link. Huh? That's not progress. Is that really how to feed xsane to gimp, these days?

It seems like xsane-gimp should update the symlink for you during installation. Did that not happen?
Also see https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/packaging-guidelines/Alternatives/.

Not per https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/xsane/c/2cc8bf4 (Drop GIMP plugin for Fedora >= 41, 2024-10-13) and the follow-up which fixes the reversed values in that commit.
I would guess that's because gimp-3.x and the xsane-gimp plugin don't play well together or, more optimistically, that it's somehow not actually needed anymore. But I don't use xsane and haven't done more than poke the package history quickly.
I see https://yingtongli.me/git/gimp-xsanecli mentioned in a few places as a Gimp 3 plugin for XSane. I haven't looked at that code, but perhaps someone interested can review it and work on getting it integrated with the Fedora gimp and xsane packages.

Yeah, I had a bit more of a poke round and:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2323739 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2311817
Indicates the package will be unavailable until this upstream issue is handled: https://gitlab.com/sane-project/frontend/xsane/-/issues/66 and that CLI wrapped you mentioned is listed as a mitigation too.

Well I do, and gimp no longer knows anything about xsane. Well, that answers that.
Gosh, I get reamed out if I accidentally add some codez that break older compilers that still come with older EL/LTS versions. Enough said.

I use Skanlite on both Fedora nd Ubuntu. You might give it a try.
(I also run the KDE spin, and I am not sure if Skanlite needs KDE).

Well, the end goal is just to be able to drop a scan directly into gimp. This used to work just fine. Simple. Straightforward. Just pick an option in Gimp's menu, and you get a scan showing right up. Yes, I am now just running xsane myself, scanning, saving, and opening in gimp.
