I put a new NVIDIA GeForce FX5200 128meg AGP 8X video card in one of my systems running Fedora Core 5. I use the NVIDIA drivers that come with Fedora.
Occasionally the screen will freeze, not very often, maybe once a week, but am thinking it's the driver.
Does anyone have any knowledge of this condition with NVIDIA?
Is there a better NVIDIA repository that is compatible with Fedora Core 5?
I've done extensive debugging on all the other hardware components and can't find the problem.

You're using the nv X driver or the nvidia X driver?

am using the 'nv' driver
You might want to try the nvidia X driver to see if the problem persists.

I will test that, kinda makes sense, as I don't have a problem if I boot into run level 3.
thanks

I've been having the exact same problem with my FX5200 for about 3 months now. The difference only is that, for me, the screen freeze is extremely consistent. I was using the Livna driver packages before. Since reverting back to the nvidia X driver, I have had no issues with freezing at all. Of course, I also no longer am able to play some of my favorite OpenGL games (PP Racer and Foo Billiard, for example) either.
I was about to throw my hands in the air and spend the $$ to get a newer card, but would rather not, especially if this really is a bug. Now that someone else is experiencing it too, I'm more confident that it is software related.
Cheers,
Chris

Have you tried the 1.0-9625 beta driver? You might also want to post an nvidia-bug-report.log on nvnews.net so that the NVIDIA folks can look into this.

Hello,
I'm using this graphic card for a year with no issue. Maybe the monitor be the problem.
TIA, Vinicius.

I thought I should intercept this thread and share my experience. I bought a new PC 2 years ago, and I installed SuSe Linux 9.1. (w/ NVDIA) Quite soon after installing I started to experience screen freezes. (which actually is that the keyboard and the mouse are cut off so that I loose control of the PC) I got fed up with this and the support people in SuSe had no clue, they obviously thought I was some nutcase having such problems. There were no serious efforts to try to find out what was wrong. After a while I installed Mandrake, but that did not help. I followed up by installing Mandriva, but that even made things worse. But after installing FC5 I have not experienced any such problems. After FC5 I became convinced that it was a software bug somewhere, not some faulty hardware . I strongly suspected the latter for some time, since I had the same problems with two distros in a row.

I doubt it's the monitor. I've used multiple monitors and changed resolutions to see if that was the issue. All to no avail...

I had a similar issue with a nvidia FX5200 AGP card. I looked for answers at nvnews.net forums. In my case, I believe that there was a bug in my BOIS perhaps that is exposed by later versions of the nvidia drivers. I have a Dell 400sc, which is a server machine. Dell says the AGP slot on this box is "not supported". I bought a PCI FX5200 and the problem is gone.
I suggest you update your BIOS to the latest available version first. If the problem still exists, try to set the AGP speed to 4x or 2x in your BIOS. Not all BIOSs allow you to do this. You could also try compiling the nvidia drivers to use AGP 4x or 2x. I can't remember exactly how to do this, but if you search the forum at nvnews.net you should be able to figure it out.

Or try disabling AGP altogether as a quick test by setting NvAGP to 0 in xorg.conf. If that doesn't help, then reducing the AGP rate isn't going to help either.

Actually, I haven't tried the beta driver since I was only using the Livna packages and and the latest version available from there is currently 1.0.7184. These packages have been there for a little over a month.
I'll see about logging a report on the NVidia lists - I had just assumed that since I was using the Livna packages, I wouldn't get much in the way of support in response.
Cheers,
Chris

7184 is quite old (a year maybe). They are legacy packages and there only to be used under certain circumstances. If there is no reason to avoid doing so, I'd upgrade to at least to 8774, although this is not likely to solve your problem.
check http://rpm.livna.org/fedora/5/i386/ or http://rpm.livna.org/fedora/5/x86_64/

1.0-7184 was released on the same day as 1.0-8774. The difference is that 1.0-7184 is a legacy driver (and is not intended for use with an FX5200).

I'm not sure why you think that, unless you know what the problem is, and how it can be fixed.

No real good reason, I'm just skeptical. I would definitely recommend using the correct driver, I just wouldn't expect it to solve the problem. That'd be awesome if it does.
