I have an FC6 computer that I'm certain worked initially but will not now boot Windows 2000.
I don't know what more to do other than reinstall Windows and then that's going to mess the Linux boot process.
Grub.config is:
cat /etc/grub.conf # grub.conf generated by anaconda # # Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file # NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that # all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /boot/, eg. # root (hd0,1) # kernel /vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 # initrd /initrd-version.img #boot=/dev/hda default=0 timeout=15 splashimage=(hd0,1)/grub/splash.xpm.gz hiddenmenu title Fedora Core (2.6.18-1.2849.fc6xen) root (hd0,1) kernel /xen.gz-2.6.18-1.2849.fc6 module /vmlinuz-2.6.18-1.2849.fc6xen ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb quiet module /initrd-2.6.18-1.2849.fc6xen.img title Fedora Core (2.6.18-1.2798.fc6xen) root (hd0,1) kernel /xen.gz-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6 module /vmlinuz-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6xen ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb quiet module /initrd-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6xen.img title Windows 2000 Pro rootnoverify (hd0,0) chainloader +1 ~ ~ Which looks ok to me. However when I get the splashscreen that asks to "press any key" nothing happens? I can press Enter or the Space Bar and it ignores the keyboard and contiues conting down until the FC6 boot process begins.
fdisk shows:
fdisk -l /dev/hda
Disk /dev/hda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Any thoughts on what to try next are welcome.

Do you have a USB keyboard? If so, check your BIOS for legacy USB options and toggle on/off. (Or try a PS/2 kb).

That sounds more like the keyboard isn't working than like grub has a problem. If it is a usb keyboard, I think grub can't talk to it without BIOS support for usb keyboards.

You missed the end of the message!
The user [not me] had plugged the keyboard into the ps2 mouse connector. The mouse was connected to a usb port. The keyboard would not work until FC6 booted after which everything appeared to work normally. Once the proper connections were restored things returned to normal.
Thanks for the response.

Did you miss the following part of his post?

Funny thing is that XP does not recognize a USB keyboard either when in the menu mode for an unsafe shutdown. I had that problem today.
What is more of a question, grub worked fine. Does windows disregard the USB mode in safe mode or is grub capable of some USB keyboard support?

GRUB picks up my USB kb just fine, as does XP in safe mode.

It is all a question of the motherboard BIOS support. Usually there are settings that look something like:
USB Support: [ ] Walk to school. [ ] Carry lunch.
You can't ever understand the phraseology in the BIOS, so you just have to try different settings and hope you don't completely disable the keyboard :-).

I know windows 2000 does not work in safe mode without legacy USB support enabled in BIOS. I was surprised that when I got the screen in XP for the boot into safe mode or boot normally, the USB keyboard did not work to make a selection. I had to wait for the timeout to expire in winXP. Since the grub menu worked for making a selection, I assumed that either winXP was using some non-BIOS features to detect the keyboard.
Oh well, I will not worry about the peculiarity on my system too much. I hardly ever get the safe mode prompt. Since grub works with the USB keyboard, I am satisfied.

Bob,
Chris is correct -- this has nothing to do with the fact that you're trying to boot Windows 2000. Forget about that aspect of it. What you're trying to do is to get Grub to recognize your keyboard.
He's almost certainly right that you've got a USB keyboard, and you've turned off an option in the BIOS. But there *are* other options -- I saw one (Intel 440 ZX, if I remember correctly) motherboard that wouldn't recognise a perfectly good PS/2 keyboard in "real mode". It worked fine when Windows or Linux had got into 32 bit mode. That particular motherboard needed a USB keyboard to enter BIOS configuration!
You may have yet another variation. But concentrate on the "keyboard in Grub" part, not the "Windows 2000" part.
Subject amended appropriately.
Hope this helps,
James.
