Mouse pointer becomes white square

I just installed fedora 19 on an older machine with an Asus M2X-MX 
motherboard. It is a machine going to a handicapped person with zero 
$$$. The onboard VGA is an nvidia 6100. I installed kmod-nvidia-304xx. 
The mouse pointer turns to a white square using nouveau and the kmod 
driver. It was a bit worse using nouveau. Launching firefox resulted in 
a complete freeze with distorted lines across the screen. The nvidia 
installation solved that issue, but not the mouse pointer issue. Would 
this be solely a hardware related issue, or is there somethign else I 
should look at?

Any input would be appreciated...
