Hi!
I am having much difficulty installing FC2 on a Compaq Proliant DL360 G2.
First of all I tried using the GUI install this just froze before completing installing the RPMs, I tried doing on install using text, and the install stopped at about the same place - however, this time the screen was covered in a load of characters!
After I tried all combinations of using ide=nodma and noacpi, and when using both together, the install managed to get through to the post-RPM bit where configuration is done - I then just had an egg timer for a long long time.... so it seems to have hung later in the process.
I'm not really sure what to try next!
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Joel
I think I read in the Fedora bug reports that the installation CD lacks the SmartAray controller driver and that's what's breaking it. Do a search see if you can find it.

Thanks for the quick replies.
I'm still not really sure of what I should be doing.... Should I remove the controller (apparently it'll work without it!!!), and then try the install again?

Yes. On a DL360 (not G2) it is a card approximately 1.25 by 2.25 that mounts in an angled socket like a memory dimm on the board behind the floppy/cd drive bay. With the system unplugged open the case, remove the card, close the case, and apply power and try the install again. Be sure to observe static precautions when doing so, and to place the card in an anti-static bag so it and the system remain usable in the future.

Or you can re-make the installation CD with the driver included and loaded by anaconda. I'm have to confess that I myself is not clear on how to go about it without looking up on it. :) Yang

Hi!
After reading the below a bit more carefully, I have two questions:
1) In http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/2004-August/msg02509.html, it would appear that this could be the same thing as I'm seeing. However, it seems that Chris built his own kernel to get the install working - then made some changes to get the first boot to work. Could someone point me in the direction of how to make the kernel that will get me through the install?
2) To avoid doing 1), I suggested removing the controller (and then maybe add it after making the changes described to /etc/modprobe.conf after the install and first boot is done). However, I think Chris says below that his description of the controller does not apply to the G2. Has anyone disabled the controller on a G2?
Thanks,
Joel

You don't need to rebuild it yourself, I think it will work with 2.6.6 or later kernels which have it built in already, so all you need to do is replace the kernel on the install disk with one of those newer kernels.

Thanks for you help guys.
I decided to try somethings else this morning. Possibly a bit of detail I neglected to state below...
When it was failing I was attempting to use sofware RAID (RAID 1) between the 2 disks in the DL360 G2 (The same as I did for the G4)..., just for interest sake, I decided to give the hardware RAID a go (RAID1+0) ... then everything worked straight away out of the box...
Seems to me that the software RAID and SmartArray don't like each other!

So the Smart Array Controller was not configured when you tried the install? duh.

You don't need to rebuild it yourself, I think it will work with 2.6.6 or later kernels which have it built in already, so all you need to do is replace the kernel on the install disk with one of those newer kernels.

Thanks,
