what does FC5 x86-64 upgrade do with i386?

    I am still a bit unclear on what I should expect when attempting
to upgrade a FC4 x86-64 installation to FC5 x86-64. Specifically, I
have installed the i386 firefox and associated plugin rpms on the
FC4 x86-64 machine using yum.repos.d entries of fedora.i386.repo,
fedora-updates.i386.repo and fedora-extras.i386.repo (which are all
disabled by default). How exactly does the anaconda react to the
presence of the i386 rpms on a x86-64 machine? Will they be removed
in favor of the x86-64 rpms form FC5?
    Also I have asked this several times here before but never gotten
a response. How are people keeping their i386 rpms properly updated
on a x86-64 machine? So far I can see no other option than to manually
reinstall the i386 packages with yum (using --enable-repo) when new
versions are available. However that is a very painful process and
makes it very difficult to keep the i386 rpms on a x86-64 machine
properly updated.

That is how I do it.  There are only 4 packages involved:  firefox,
libgnomeui, libbonoboui, and (with FC5) gnome-keyring.  Those are the
only i386 packages I intentionally install on my machine (aside from
those that come along as part of the x86_64 base/updates), and I
merely watch for updates to those packages.  When I see them, I
manually run yum update, enabling the i386 repo.

installing streamtuner on FC5

I'm trying to install the music stream directory browser Streamtuner.
Following the instructions in the Stanton Finley Linux Installation
Notes

I've downloaded the package streamtuner-0.99.99-12.fc5.i386.rpm from
http://www.bennewitz.com/rpms/streamtuner/fc5/.  But the installation
fails with a warning: "streamtuner-0.99.99-12.fc5.i386.rpm: Header V3
DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID e8d479fc" and then an error: libtag_c.so.0
is needed by streamtuner-0.99.99-12.fc5.i386.

Any hints as to how to proceed?  I've googled libtag_c.so.0 but haven't
found anything I can make sense of.  Thanks for the help.

with the upcoming upgrade to FC6 i recall that on my laptop FC4 has this "nice"

feature it would restart dhcp whenever i had put the machine to suspend and 
opened it again. That meant travelling between home and work it was "just" 
opening the laptop and I was online.

With FC5 that disappeared for me, now i have to explicitly click buttons,
or do "ifdown eth0; ifup eth0"  (i.e. the device didn't even shut down).

I suppose the FC4 method would make more sense. I looked at
/etc/sysconfig/apm-scripts/apmscript for both FC4 and 5, but they're
the same. Or is this a configuration option in FC5 that i haven't
discovered yet?

One word: NetworkManager.

Well, two words strung together with the space between deleted, but who's 
counting?

 	# chkconfig network off
 	# chkconfig NetworkManager on
 	# service NetworkManager start

should do it, IIRC.  If not, write back.

NetworkManager is a really cool tool!

howto change default sound card

I'm running FC5 with two soundcards.  Here's the contents of
the /proc/asound/cards file:

0 [AudioPCI       ]: ENS1371 - Ensoniq AudioPCI
                      Ensoniq AudioPCI ENS1371 at 0xd800, irq 9
1 [DAC            ]: USB-Audio - stereo-link 1200 USB DAC
                      stereo-link stereo-link 1200 USB DAC at
usb-0000:03:0d.1-1, full speed

I would like to change the default from 0 (AudioPCI) to 1 (DAC) so I
don't have to do this manually from Kmix each time I log on.  I'm
hesistant to just alter this "cards" file as there are "card0" and
"card1" directories at the same level.  Any suggestions?  Thanks for the

The PCI card drivers are loaded when udev starts and the hotplug events
cause the kernel modules to load. For these cards, the card index number
(card 0 == default card) is assigned inside modprobe.conf:

    alias snd-card-0 snd-via82xx
    options snd-card-0 index=0
    options snd-via82xx index=0

You could *probably* push the USB audio device in at index 0 by:

    alias snd-card-0 snd-usb-audio
    options snd-card-0 index=0
    options snd-usb-audio index=0

(don't forget to edit the entries for the AudioPCI entry to alias as
snd-card-1 with option of index=1)

But it might not work like that. Try it, see if it works.

My new modprobe.conf is:

alias eth0 8139too

alias snd-card-0 snd-usb-audio
options snd-card-0 index=0
options snd-usb-audio index=0

alias snd-card-1 snd-ens1371
options snd-card-1 index=1
options snd-ens1371 index=1

remove snd-ens1371 { /usr/sbin/alsactl store 0 >/dev/null 2>&1
|| : ; }; /sbin/modprobe -r --ignore-remove snd-ens1371

where I left the "remove" line as it was originally.

Kmix comes up with the usb soundcard as default.  Thanks!

The remaining problem may be a bug.  In order to get xmms to work after
starting it I go options -> preferences and then configure the ALSA
Output Plugin.  The Audio device entry shows "hw:0,0" -- which
corresponds to the usb soundcard on the pulldown menu -- but I have to
apply this and restart xmms in order to get any sound....
