I having problems with jackd not starting, because it can't find a backend
Which one do I use pulseaudio or alsa ?
There is no output in /var/log/messages for jackd.
Here is the output of running "jackd"

There are no other applications using the sound system.

Have you tried starting jackd just after login? Even if an application is not making any audible sounds it can still using the sound card. firefox does this.
Also I think you need to edit your /etc/asound.conf file to set up jack properly. I haven't been able to get this to work properly either. I can get jark started and running ok, but then I can't get it to make a sound.

Do you have pulseaudio running? If so, stop it first, then run jackd -d alsa. You'll probably also need to make some config file changes, but jackd will tell you what to change. I'm still trying to learn this stuff myself.
