Looks like the system has 2G RAM, which is marginal these days.
Swapping to a mechical
disk would be really slow if the disk is failing.
A good test of this is to check you hard drive LED light
on the front of your computer. If it is on solid or
flashing like crazy when the slow down occurs, you
are probably out of memory and swapping.
And another test is if you are on screen saver, wiggle
your mouse, and the screen recovers quickly to a point,
but then stops part way through and slowly line by
line recovers the rest of the way.

Usual caveat: ordinary file activity will fill your available RAM with
cached data pages. These are normally "clean" (unmodified) and can be
freed instantly on need.

OTOH you've got 1GB of swap used. That is "idle" process memory not in
RAM; if that is needed back by things you interact with then there will
be slowness retrieving it.

Hoo, look at those firefox VIRT sizes. Som of that will be common, but
that's a lot of memory use IMO.
See if the slowdown correlate with firefox size. See if a firefox
restart gives you a long period before the next slowdown.

Aye. Even without failure.
A good test of this is to check you hard drive LED light
on the front of your computer. If it is on solid or
flashing like crazy when the slow down occurs, you
are probably out of memory and swapping.
The vmstat and iostat commands are great for this. Kick them off with a
1 second report interval. The first data line has the initial totals,
the subsequence lines are the changes. So swapping and other paging
_should_ be near zero in the second and following lines. See if these
numbers are obviously high during the slowdowns.

its Fedora....I think its Mozilla's Firefox, this behavior also has hit
my OpenSuSE and my CEntOS laptops....something is eating up the RAM on
them when Firefox is running...and it seems to go back to being snappy
and fast once I close and then reopen FF, but after a few
minutes?.....it slows down again.

Seems to me Firefox has had a lot of problems lately.
Go to brave.com and install the Brave Browser. It will
import your Firefox settings. I use both. One give me
grief, I switch to the other. Great for figuring out
if the problem is the browser, the Internet, the web
page, or the OS.

I already fell back to my "Backup Browser"...which is just a plain no
frills GNome Web". So far?....all is well, I'm not crawling anymore, and
I can get work done. I'll just camp out here with this browser and
whenever the devs fix whatever's wrong with FF, then I'll make the move
back....but for now I'm good. Thanks for the suggestion!!

And the nice about multi-process firefox is that if you kill the "Web
Content" process that is too big, then you can narrow down which site
was causing you the problem.

Here, firefox constantly eats CPU and a huge amount of RAM, because I
have hundreds tabs. This causes firefox-specific minor and major hangs,
and certainly impacts the system response as well (because of CPU/RAM
eating). In such conditions, it's quite impossible to distinguish what
add-ons and tab content are causing the CPU eating. Closing firefox of
course fixes it all.

CEntOS laptops....something is eating up the RAM on them when Firefox is running...and it
seems to go back to being snappy and fast once I close and then reopen FF, but after a few
minutes?.....it slows down again.
Here, firefox constantly eats CPU and a huge amount of RAM, because I
have hundreds tabs. This causes firefox-specific minor and major hangs,
and certainly impacts the system response as well (because of CPU/RAM
eating). In such conditions, it's quite impossible to distinguish what
add-ons and tab content are causing the CPU eating. Closing firefox of
course fixes it all.
If you run top, there should be a bunch of "Web Content" processes. If
you kill the one that is using excessive CPU, you can see which tabs
have crashed and narrow down which sites are causing the problem. You
can also easily restore the tabs, so you don't lose them.
