No networking?

I'm on fedora 17 and I just started trying to install a
fedora 17 virtual machine where I can screw around with
stuff without blowing up my actual machine.

I get to step 5 of 5 in the New VM wizard of virt
manager and it tells me "No networking" and has
a little warning triangle icon.

Whyfor? All my existing virtual machines use one
of the two bridge devices I have, but it doesn't
seem to see the bridges?

It used to see them in earlier versions of virt-manager.

Is this a bug or some kind of new feature that
requires me to go to infinite pains to make
virt-manager aware of the bridges for my
convenience?

I'll try to do the install and manually tweak the
xml later to see if I can add the bridge...

If you hover over the warning icon it should have a tooltip that might provide
more info.

This definitely is not a new 'feature' so something must be going wrong. Are
you using virt-preview? What's the output of sudo virsh iface-list --all and
sudo virsh net-list --all?

I delete the default network definition that comes when
virtualization is installed because I always want to
use bridged networking, and don't want dnsmasq and wot-not
cluttering up my system. I never previously needed to
define any network, virt-manager always offered the
bridge interfaces.

The bifrost and br0 interfaces are the bridges I have existing
virtual machines on, and I was indeed able to edit the xml after
the initial VM install and create the interface connected to br0
that I wanted, so I have networking now in the new KVM.

The host machine is running stock f17, no virt-preview repo
(it does have all the f17 updates applied).

Nope. No tooltip. I just tried it again, and all I get is the icon.

Hmm, maybe doing dumpxml for some interface is failing and causing
virt-manager to throw out the rest. virt-manager --debug info from app startup
should be interesting.

Hey Tom, sorry for the delayed response.

libvirt or netcf is choking on something here. If you're still seeing the
issue, try 'sudo virsh iface-dumpxml' for every name in 'sudo virsh
iface-list
--all': one of them should error like that log message.

Then take the associated ifcfg file in /etc/sysconfig/network/ and attach to a
libvirt bug report and we can follow up there.

There have been some updates since I last tried, and it looks like
one of them fixed it. I no longer get the errors I used to get.

Yes, that bug (missing vlan/bond element) was fixed somewhere between
netcf-0.1.9 and 0.2.2, and I recently updated everything F17+ to
netcf-0.2.2 (I did that around the beginning of September, but the push
to stable was delayed for a bit, especially in F18 due to the beta
freeze in effect at the time).
