can you test changing

from:
convert $tmpdir/wall.jpg $bmp

to
convert $tmpdir/wall.jpg bmp3:$bmp

and see if it goes better?

That does indeed seem to work, the XP virtual machine
displays the converted image as wallpaper when bmp3: is
used to generate it.
