static page for F7 release, new directions
by Karsten Wade
For the Fedora 7 release, we are going to be using a static set of pages
for the front of fedoraproject.org. For those of you who remember the
Fedora Core 6 release and how hammered the Wiki was, you'll be happy
that we can rest a bit easier for the coming release.
Here is a *mock-up* using current styling, based on some existing
conversations (source image below[1]); it is put forth for discussion on
this list:
http://people.redhat.com/~kwade/fedora/websites/images/main-page-redesign...
Really, it's just a starting point for conversation. I expect all ya'll
to speak up. :)
We'll either deliver this as a hand-built static set of pages, or we'll
use our spankin' new Plone instance[2] to output it. Doing the latter
is useful because we simultaneously work up our CSS for Plone.
The static set of pages are:
Main page
|=> Download via torrent
|=> Download from a mirror
|=> Fedora for end-users
|=> Fedora for developers
\=> Join Fedora
The only other links on the page are:
[Docs] => docs.fedoraproject.org
[Wiki] => fedoraproject.org/wiki (or wiki.fedoraproject.org?)
Legal => fedoraproject.org/wiki/Legal
Trademark Guidelines => http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Legal/TrademarkGuidelines
That is a reduction from 66 links (current front page) to 9.
The page we design or some variant of it can become the permanent
front-page for fedoraproject.org. In that case, we'll work from the set
of redesign ideas from FUDCon[3], and in that scenario the links on the
page actually *reduce* to:
Main page
|=> I want to do stuff with Fedora
|=> I want to get Fedora and stuff
|=> I want to join Fedora
|=> Legal
|=> Usage Policy
\=> Trademark Guidelines
Something like that. :)

[2] http://fedoraproject.org/fedora/ is a Plone instance that, for
technical reasons, doesn't have full auth for everyone. It is where we
are going to build out the design for the new pages.

Wiki starting points? Drafts...
by Francis Earl
I originally posted this to fedora-docs-list not knowing that was the
wrong place for it... this is a copy and paste as I believe this list is
more the correct place:
I'm looking for somewhere to get started on the wiki, and I'm not sure
where to proceed?
This lead me to the Drafts wiki page, am I free to edit these pages as I
see fit? What is the etiquette here?
Just looking briefly at the "Getting Started" page, I believe a few
improvements could be made. It's overtone is very professional, which is
intimidating. I also think things like Graphic User Interface and Window
Manager should provide links to wikipedia so the user can learn more
about the topic if they wish. Wikipedia is provided in the Free Content
bookmarks folder in Fedora 7t4, so I don't think that would be an issue?
I think the wiki is the wrong place to try and explain such things
though.
Also, I don't see a way to upload images? There is a saying "a picture
tells a thousand words", and I believe it's true. I don't even see a way
to add images though? Screenshots (of a particular section of relevance
on the desktop) would greatly clarify what things say, and provide an
air of confidence for the user "I must be doing it right, it looks the
same".
Just some thoughts...

Plone rollout
by Mike McGrath
Ok, so it sounds like we're all in agreement. Lets setup what has to be
done. Fedora 7 GA release is on May 24th. Less then a month. I'd like
to have our page get released a week before if possible, on May 17th.
My hopes are that we can give a fresh new look the site and digg it. It
will be a good load test before it really counts.
One thing we need to remember is that many of the RH folks, including
myself, will be at the summit during a portion of the next month.

What can we get done say... by the end of the week?

Wiki Patch
by Ricky Zhou
Hi!
In the kindofblue theme, the sidebar is absolutely positioned, which
makes it overlap/cover the footer on short pages (e.g.
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Websites/Join?action=info).
I've made a quick patch to switch to a float-based layout and avoid this
problem. The patch also replaces "sidebar-header" (purely
presentational markup) with a background-image on #header (this required
me to alter wiki-sidebar-header.png slightly).
I've put the relevant files up here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/RickyZhou/kindofblue
Side note: I just joined this group yesterday, so please let me know if
there are any tasks that I can look at/get involved in.
Thanks,
Ricky

I have reverted this change. We have way too many links in the
frontpage. I don't think we need more marketing links now. If anything
invest in cleaning up http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Marketing so that
the links are prominent and content is well organized.
Next step would getting super simple content in the plone site up and
running.
Rahul
I apologize for that. I did not know the exact procedure for modifications.
In the future I will be sure to make sure that I have explicit permission
before making any changes to any part of the wiki.
