/usr/sbin/mkinitrd: illegal option -- v

While using mkinitrd on debian sarge, it gives the following error: mkinitrd -v -f --with=aacraid --with=sd_mod --with=scsi_mod initrd-2.6.16-xen.img 2.6.16-xen /usr/sbin/mkinitrd: illegal option -- v $Id: mkinitrd,v 1.201 2004/05/16 22:00:48 herbert Exp $ Usage: /usr/sbin/mkinitrd [OPTION]... <-o outfile> [version] Options: -d confdir Specify an alternative configuration directory. -k Keep temporary directory used to make the image. -m command Set the command to make an initrd image. -o outfile Write to outfile. -r root Override ROOT setting in mkinitrd.conf. See mkinitrd(8) for further details. It looks like the syntax for mkinitrd is different from the ones used in RH based distros. I have been trying different combinations however haven't had any luck generating the initrd image. Can anyone please tell me how to use this under debian to generate the image ?? -- regards, Anand Gupta

FYI switching VTs in guest framebuffer with virt-manager

A fair number of people have wondered how to switch virtual consoles in guest framebuffer using virt-manager. The basic problem is that all keystrokes need to be passed through to the guest & not interpreted by the local host. This is a tricker problem than it sounds because while you can grab the keyboard using XGrabKeyboard (or its GTK equiv), this does not block VT switching. So with the recent release of 0.2.3 of virt-manager I implemented a simple workaround. Here is a summary of the behaviour in virt-manager now: - In normal view keyboard grab is not activated - so regular window manager key bindings will still be processed by your local X session rather than the guest. - In fullscreen view, keyboard grab is automatically activated (and deactivated when switching back to normal view). So all keys will be processed by the guest with exception of the Ctrl+Alt+XXX combos - At any time 'sticky modifiers' can be activated. Press any modifier key 3 times in a row, and it will 'stick' on until the next non-modifier key is released. So, if you want to send Ctrl+Alt+F1 to the guest, then you would type 'Ctrl Ctrl Ctrl Alt+F1'. I've found the time '3 quick taps of Ctrl' quickly becomes second nature & not nearly as tedious as it sounds - switching VTs is a fairly infrequent operation after all. Panic on boot

I followed the Fedora Xen Quickstart for FC5 (http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FedoraXenQuickstartFC5)and when I booted got a message saying (approximately): Kernel panic on CPU 0 IO + APIC + timer doesn't work...try booting with the noapic option But I was already using the noapic option. FYI: vnc console now only accessible on 127.0.0.1 by default

Just a heads-up for anyone who uses the VNC service for accessing the graphical framebuffer for fully-virt & para-virt guests. As of xen-3.0.2-43 in rawhide, the VNC server will default to only accepting connections on localhost (127.0.0.1). The reason for this change is that the VNC servers do not currently[1] have any support for VNC password authentication, so listening on 0.0.0.0 by default is rather a bad idea. If you need to revert to old behaviour either set vnclisten="0.0.0.0" in the guest domain's config, or to change it system wide, set the vnc-listen parameter in /etc/xen/xend-config.sxp. I'd recommend though to just forward the VNC port securely over SSH instead if feasible. Regards, Dan.
