HVM guests: Cannot allocate memory

Hi, my Dom0 is running with Fedora Core 6 and overall I would say it works. But I have a problem with HVM guests: I can start them just after system reboot but they won't start after I worked some time. "xm create" just gives me the error message "VmError: (12, 'Cannot allocate memory')". The error does always appear when my "free" memory (as shown by top) is lower than the amount required by my HVM guest. What I do not understand is why Xen is not able to use memory which is used as cache by the Kernel. It is not uncommon for me to have 2-3 GB memory used as cache but only 20-30 MB free. Furthermore I expected that even SWAP can be used for my Xen guest which are another 2 GB. Is there a workaround/bugreport for this behavior? Is there any hope it can be fixed? fs

guest debian on fedora host with virt-manager

Hello every body! I have installed Xen on fedora to try virt-manager. All is allright to install an fedora guest. But now i want to install an debian guest . And i don't find the address to have the debian medium. I'have tried this one " http://ftp2.fr.debian.org/debian/" and this one " http://ftp2.de.debian.org/debian/" but it doesn't match... I just know the Fedora medium: http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/6/i386/os/ So, please i need the address of the debian medium ... Thanks ! benjamin

Cannot get xen on RHEL5 to use a RHEL4 repository

I am running xen on a Dell 2850/ 3.0Ghz/ 12GB RAM/ RHEL5 Beta2 system. I am attempting to create a rhel4 guest. I have copied the rhel4 packages from cd into a directory (/var/www/html/rhel4) and enabled http. I created a repository on the host machine and updated yum to look at that repository using createrepo under /var/www/html/rhel4. I am able to see the repository with a web browser on another machine. My issue comes when I use the http://myhost/rhel4 <http://myhost/rhel4> in the configuration window asking where it asks where the installation media resides. I get the following error: Guest Install Error ERROR: Invalid URL location given: [Errno:14] HTTP Error 404: Not found. I am about at my wits end on how to rectify this issue. Dr. Google indicated that setting mem=NNN in the kernel args effectively disables MXT, however when I tried that, I got no kernel panics, but the VM hung shortly after "Uncompressing the kernel" So, I went out and snagged an old kernel SRPM for RH72 from the RedHat archives, added one line to the spec file to swap CONFIG_MXT=y with CONFIG_MXT=n in the kernel configs, rebuilt, mounted up the RH72 disk image, chrooted to it, installed my new rpm in place of the existing rpm, fired it up, and voila, it appears to be working. Can't boot RH7.2 fully-virtualized guest

Hi folks, I'm using FC6 (kernel 2.6.19-1.2895.fc6xen), with SELinux disabled. I'm running on a Dell D820 laptop with vmx extensions enabled (confirmed by looking for vmx in /proc/cpuinfo), trying to boot a RH7.2 (uh, yeah, don't ask...) fully-virtualized guest. I used virt-manager to successfully install RH7.2 on a disk image. However when I then try to boot from the image, on the console I see: MXT page nr start=ffffffff len=ffffffff Ooops! Too many entries in the memory map" Spewed out a lot of times, followed by some kernel information, ending up with: "Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address ffffffff" This ends in a kernel panic, complaining: "<0> Kernel panic: Attempted to kill the idle task! Here's what I get without using the initrd: VFS: Cannot open root device "sda1" or unknown-block(0,0) Please append a correct "root=" boot option Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0) Please let me have your considerations. FC6/Xen/CIFS mount broken

With further narrowing down, I've isolated my FC6/xen crashes to mounting a CIFS volume. A single mount is all that is required to cause the kernel oops. Please see fedora bugzilla # 214622. It looks as though the base kernel has been patched, but the xenified kernel has not. (?) If the xen kernels have been patched, then the problem still exists. Doesn't matter whether the Windows share is mounted rw or ro. Same behavior. No IO required. After the mount, the machine will crash within a minute or so, virtually every time so it should be easy to test. Can anyone tell me when the non-xen CIFS kernel patch will make it into the xen kernels? This bug has been driving me crazy. http://redhat.download.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/linux/core/development/… doesn't exist. Is he coming back? Sorry I had a flick through devel-list archives but didn't see a matching subject and fedora-devel suggested asking the xen maintainer.. To be honest I don't know who that is.

FC6/Xen crash -- isolated to rsnapshot job

I've isolated my FC6/xen crashing problems to cron backup jobs that were running in my dom0. I have moved the jobs into a domU and now observe the crashing behavior in the domU. At least the entire environment doesn't come down when it's in a domU. In my crontab, I have a series of rsnapshot backup jobs to backup a handful of windows and linux servers. For windows machines, the script mounts a share on the windows machine using CIFS (samba). It seems only the Windows backup jobs crash the machine and then only crash when two are scheduled to start at exactly the same time. I can replicate the problem by running the crontab command from the command line. If I run the commands one at a time, no crash. If I start them both back to back, the crash occurs within 30 seconds or so. Under FC4, these scripts/backup jobs worked fine for almost a year without intervention. I've read there have been a host of problems with CIFS in FC6, but I thought they had been resolved. As a workaround, I can change the job schedule for now, but something is still broken in the kernel, samba or both.
