Welcome to the Fedora Xfce list
by Kevin Fenzi
Greetings everyone.
Welcome to the Fedora Xfce list.
I'd like to use this list to coordinate Xfce SIG activities and discuss
Xfce in Fedora. User comments/suggestions welcome as well as developer
input. :)
I'd like to start doing SIG meetings on IRC around once a month as
well. Christoph has setup a matix for people to say when they might
best be available. If you are interested in attending, please go fill
out:
http://whenisgood.net/xfce-sig
Hopefully this will make it easier to get feedback from users and new
people helping out.
Thanks!

No Xfce 4.8 for Fedora 13 :(
by Christoph Wickert
I am sorry to announce that there will be no Xfce 4.8 in Fedora 13.
Xfce upstream decided to delay the release of the new version by two
months. This means that Xfce 4.8 final will be released on June 12th.
Our schedule was already tight, but given this delay, it is impossible
for us to include 4.8 in Fedora 13.
Unlike the KDE SIG we don't want to ship a pre-release. Even if we
wanted we could only ship the very first release pre1, which would be a
major drawback for most users. Additionally our guidelines demand that a
feature must be in a "testable state" for feature freeze (February 9th),
but by that time Xfce won't have anything released yet.
For more info and the reason of the slip, please read Jannis'
announcement on the Xfce developers mailing list:
http://foo-projects.org/pipermail/xfce4-dev/2010-January/027979.html
Sorry for the delay. We'll se if we can include some new parts of Xfce
4.8 such as Thunar 1.1 with gvfs support. We'll keep you informed about
any changes.

Christoph

Wanted: Suggestions for the F13 Xfce Spin
by Christoph Wickert
Some random thoughts about the package selection Spin:
Drop gftp (3,3 mb): we can do the same with Thunar and gigilo.
Drop totem: Should save us ~ 12 mb. Parole seems a good alternative.
0.2.0 was just released and works fine, except there are some problems
with the audio. And we would loose automatic codec installation with
PackageKit.
Replace mousepad with leafpad? Mousepad was forked from leafpad to add
printing. Unfortunately this requires xfconf wich we don't ship (in
favor of system-config-printer) and is very limited. Leafpad now has
full printing support via the gtk-print dialog. A rewrite of mousepad is
planned, but it's not sure if it will be before F13.
What about midori? of course we are not going to drop it, but I don't
think that it can replace firefox until F13, for example it doesn't work
with the java or parole plugin.
Another login manager? We could use to SLiM or LXDM. LXDM has more
features, but is still in early stages of development and there are
still SELinux problems. Downsides:
1. With SLiM and LXDM we loose automatic unlocking of the default
keyring, but we are working on this (at least I am in LXDM).
2. We loose fast user switching. Not sure how popular this is
though.
Include some plugins for geany?
More development stuff, e.g meld?
More suggestions or feedback, especially on the login manager?

Plans for Xfce 4.8
by Christoph Wickert
Xfce 4.8 is supposed to be released on 2010-04-12.
Currently the Xfce SIG is planing to ship it in F13, although this is
ambitious. The Xfce milestones are very close to the F13 schedule and
might be delayed. We only have 8 days to from the release of pre1 till
Feature freeze. If there is nothing to test at feature freeze, the
feature may be dropped from F13.
The current plan is:
* F13 Alpha will come with Xfce 4.8pre1 (15 days from release to
Alpha freeze)
* F13 Beta will come with Xfce 4.8pre2 (22 days from release to
Beta freeze)
* F13 RC will come with Xfce 4.8final (17 days from release to RC
compose)
Status;
* Reviews for the 3 new packages garcon, tumbler and libxfceui are
in progress
* Xfce components that already have a 4.7/4.8 release (not yet in
rawhide)
* exo 0.5.1
* libxfce4util 4.7.1
* thunar-1.1
* xfconf 4.7.0
* xfce4-settings 4.7.0
More info about Xfce 4.8 is on the feature page in the wiki:
