For number 3 I've tested on a number of 24 and 25 systems
and haven't been able to recreate the issue. I don't know
what to suggest but if you find anything please let me know.

Hi Jim,
I was able to install a new printer when booted from the Live
DVD.
Everything was grayed out when I tried to do it as a user after
I had installed to the hard drive. Beboot made no difference.
I had to install a new printer as root.
