Hi all!
XFCE 4.20 is in Fedora 42, woo! I was thinking this would be a good time to do some TLC on the website/docs.
For instance:
* Update the spins (https://fedoraproject.org/spins/xfce) page with a more recent screenshot and update the list of installed applications
* * Abiword is no longer included, for example. Should we switch that and Gnumeric to LibreOffice? I personally quite like Gnumeric, so maybe find an alternate writer?
* * I've made a screenshot from Fedora 42 Rawhide 20250204.n.0 in the same spirit as the current example: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/File:Screenshot_2025-02-06_14-18-50.png'. I can add that if someone wouldn't mind reminding me how to update the spins.fedoraproject.org page (:
* I've also edited https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Xfce (only for English, sorry :/). If you happen to glance over it let me know if I've missed anything!
* I think updating the Live CD page (https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SIGs/Xfce/XfceLive) might be a good idea as I heard other spins are moving to kiwi for their image generation; might be handy to include the new stuff (:
Thanks,
Sean

Awesome. Thanks for taking that on.

Yeah, we have resisted including libreoffice due to it's large size, but we could just do that. :(

Might replace the yum calls to dnf? and add a bit about testing on wayland in 4.20?

Yeah, Xfce has actually already moved to kiwi also. ;)

Hello all.
Just curious to ask, will you all consider move using markdown editor like Marker instead of abiword format documents?
Or it's not good migration path for xfce spins?

As gnome doesn't have office, and xfce does not build one. 😂
I do agree Libreoffice is too big in an ISO for xfce. 😂

Hi all,
Small update:
* I've submitted the new screenshot to the CMS, needs to be approved/published I suppose: https://fedora.gitlab.io/websites-apps/fedora-websites/cms/fedoraproject.org...
* RE the writer; turns out abiword is in F42 and is still being maintained here: https://gitlab.gnome.org/World/AbiWord. I've submitted a request to have it re-added to the xfce-office group here: https://pagure.io/fedora-comps/pull-request/1081#
* I'll work on more wiki additions, but anyone else is more than welcomed to as well :) Here are two additions I think we can add: * * How to test Wayland (from starting with a fresh install onward): https://wiki.xfce.org/releng/wayland_roadmap#testing
* * Details on how the Live CD is created with Kiwi. I haven't figured out exactly how that is all done, but this seems like a good spot to start https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/KiwiBuiltCloudImages
Thanks to Kevin for the help, and for your suggestion Benyamin! I had no idea the whisker menu developer had made something like that! I'm not trying to be biased towards Abiword (though I personally like the speed/simplicity of abiword), it just seems like the path of least resistance to get back a writer, so I'm happy to support whatever people feel like is best!
Thanks for all your help and thoughts!

Hi all,
I think most of the things I was hoping to get done for F42 are complete:
* The updated screenshot is now live! https://fedoraproject.org/spins/xfce
* While Abiword is technically in F42, it seemed like a better idea (and a good time) to just switch to libreoffice-writer/calc. Sorry for the back and forth on this; it seemed a bit easier/more consistent to just go with programs that are already maintained well in Fedora rather than redoing all the work for Abiword's new upstream (I'm not a package maintainer anyway). The switch for F42+ was done here: https://pagure.io/fedora-comps/pull-request/1086#
* * I've also updated the https://fedoraproject.org/spins/xfce page with the libreoffice changes and some minor edits to improve consistency between the spins, but those wont go live until F42 is released: https://gitlab.com/fedora/websites-apps/fedora-websites/cms/fedoraproject.or...
* Wiki additions are done
* * I've added a section for testing Wayland here: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Xfce#Testing_Wayland.
* * The details about the LiveCD and its creation have also been updated: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SIGs/Xfce/XfceLive
Thanks everyone for your help! Looking forward to F42 :)

Glad to see Abiword will be kept. I still use Abiword and Gnumeric regularly because I can depend on these programs to just work. Sure they have some not show stopping issues/bugs which will likely never be resolved but they are lighting fast. And none of my time is wasted on changes which I may or may not like which keeps me focused on my work instead the text editor and spreadsheet. If I need a "missing" feature, I use Libre or Google.
