How do I set Xfce as my gdm default?

Hi All,

I just set up a computer with Scientific Linux 6.1, using
the default "Workstation".  Then I installed Xfce.

Question, how do I change my gdm default from gnome to Xfce?

/etc/gdm/custom.conf
     [daemon]
     DefaultSession=xfce.desktop

Does not work.  What am I doing wrong?

Not sure. Might need to be just 'xfce' ?

Alternately, you do know that once you choose the xfce session it
should remember and always give you that one by default. ;)

"Supposedly" it has to be the same thing that appears in
/usr/share/xsessions

The buzzard goes right back to gnome.

Is it just me or did gdm get worse with recent
releases?

Check to see if the user has a .dmrc file
[Desktop]
Session=xfce
Language=en_US.utf8
Layout=us

will get you xfce

gnome will get you gnome over the default.

As far as I can tell, my .dmrc is being ignored.  I do believe

And it's not even the same bug since RHEL/Scientific/CentOS 6 use gdm
2.28 and Fedora 15 comes with gdm 3.0, which is a complete rewrite.

yum install switchdesktop

then run it in a terminal as <user>

there is also a GUI    yum install switchdesktop-gui

again run it as <user>

According to pbone.net there is only a switchdesk available
for FC15.  YUM says nothing is available either (switchdesk,
switchdesktop, or switchdesktop-gui).

I doubt it either as I believe it would give the same
result as this FC14 bug:

I can suggest to look at /etc/X11/xinit/Xclients, but I am not sure that gdm reads this file.
I use FXCE since 4.4.3, but never with gdm.

Now this piece of code look interesting (Xclients).  For starters,
it explains what the "PREFERRED" variable in /etc/sysconfig/desktop
is doing.

/etc/X11/xinit/Xclients:

GSESSION="$(which gnome-session 2>/dev/null)"
STARTKDE="$(which startkde 2>/dev/null)"

# check to see if the user has a preferred desktop
PREFERRED=
if [ -f /etc/sysconfig/desktop ]; then
     . /etc/sysconfig/desktop
     if [ "$DESKTOP" = "GNOME" ]; then
         PREFERRED="$GSESSION"
     elif [ "$DESKTOP" = "KDE" ]; then
         PREFERRED="$STARTKDE"
     fi
fi

if [ -n "$PREFERRED" ]; then
     exec "$PREFERRED"
fi

When I next get to the server with this issue, I will
change PREFERRED to "/usr/bin/startxfce4" and see what

Right, that should do the trick. This is explained in 
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/LXDE#Make_LXDE_the_default_Desktop
and /usr/share/doc/initscripts-*/sysconfig.txt.

Unfortunately it only works with gdm 2.x, 3.0
ignores /etc/sysconfig/desktop completely.

One more reason to kick it from the xfce spin and use lxdm instead ;-)

Why you can't  just install lxdm. It is good enough. Anyway you do not use GDM.

And also I don't understand why lightdm is not in Fedora repository. OpenSuse for instance, uses it 
already.

Yeah, but Todd is using CentOS, so he needs EPEL. LXDM is not packaged
for EPEL and I have no intentions to maintain it there.

It has serious issues with SELinux, PolicyKit and lacks support for dual
screen setups.

Because you didn't package it. :P

It's a PITA to package because it lacks files such as a working PAM
configuration that are required to make it working. The tarball one can
download is unusable without further patches.

I use LXDM since Fedora 16 is out. What kind of SELinux, PolicyKit issues are talking about. I do 
not have any errors.

Two choices:

1) Go here  http://rpm.pbone.net/   mark Fedora 12 and Fedora 13.
Enter switchdesktop into the search window. Pick the one that you want.

2a) Or go here   http://mirrors.reflected.net/fedora/linux/releases/
 select the 13 folder (the 12 folder is empty). Select  "Everything".
Select your Arch. Select 'os'. Select 'Packages'. Search for
'switchdesktop'.

2b)  Or go here  http://archives.fedoraproject.org/pub/archive/fedora/
 if you want the Fedora 12 package. Follow a similar pat as in 2a

I came up with a "work around".  It is a bit "cheezy",
