Hi All,
I just set up a computer with Scientific Linux 6.1, using the default "Workstation". Then I installed Xfce.
Question, how do I change my gdm default from gnome to Xfce?
/etc/gdm/custom.conf [daemon] DefaultSession=xfce.desktop
Does not work. What am I doing wrong?
Many thanks, -T

Not sure. Might need to be just 'xfce' ?
Alternately, you do know that once you choose the xfce session it should remember and always give you that one by default. ;)

"Supposedly" it has to be the same thing that appears in /usr/share/xsessions

The buzzard goes right back to gnome.
Is it just me or did gdm get worse with recent releases?

Hi Christoph,
The symptoms are the same. Lets hope they test the problem before they just close it.

According to pbone.net there is only a switchdesk available for FC15. YUM says nothing is available either (switchdesk, switchdesktop, or switchdesktop-gui).
I doubt it either as I believe it would give the same result as this FC14 bug:

I can suggest to look at /etc/X11/xinit/Xclients, but I am not sure that gdm reads this file. I use FXCE since 4.4.3, but never with gdm.

Now this piece of code look interesting (Xclients). For starters, it explains what the "PREFERRED" variable in /etc/sysconfig/desktop is doing.
/etc/X11/xinit/Xclients:
GSESSION="$(which gnome-session 2>/dev/null)" STARTKDE="$(which startkde 2>/dev/null)"
# check to see if the user has a preferred desktop PREFERRED= if [ -f /etc/sysconfig/desktop ]; then . /etc/sysconfig/desktop if [ "$DESKTOP" = "GNOME" ]; then PREFERRED="$GSESSION" elif [ "$DESKTOP" = "KDE" ]; then PREFERRED="$STARTKDE" fi fi
if [ -n "$PREFERRED" ]; then exec "$PREFERRED" fi
When I next get to the server with this issue, I will change PREFERRED to "/usr/bin/startxfce4" and see what happens. I will get back.

Right, that should do the trick. This is explained in https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/LXDE#Make_LXDE_the_default_Desktop and /usr/share/doc/initscripts-*/sysconfig.txt.
Unfortunately it only works with gdm 2.x, 3.0 ignores /etc/sysconfig/desktop completely.

And also I don't understand why lightdm is not in Fedora repository. OpenSuse for instance, uses it already.

Description Andy Grover 2011-12-14 20:51:58 EST Description of problem: lxde-based vm is very slow since lxdm-binary is hogging the cpu Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): lxdm-0.3.0-5.fc17

It has serious issues with SELinux, PolicyKit and lacks support for dual screen setups.
And also I don't understand why lightdm is not in Fedora repository.
Because you didn't package it. :P
It's a PITA to package because it lacks files such as a working PAM configuration that are required to make it working. The tarball one can download is unusable without further patches.

/etc/gdm/custom.conf [daemon] DefaultSession=xfce.desktop
Does not work. What am I doing wrong?

yum install switchdesktop
then run it in a terminal as<user>
there is also a GUI yum install switchdesktop-gui
again run it as<user>
According to pbone.net there is only a switchdesk available for FC15. YUM says nothing is available either (switchdesk, switchdesktop, or switchdesktop-gui).
I doubt it either as I believe it would give the same result as this FC14 bug:

Thank you for the help,
What release of Fedora is Scientific Linux 6.1 based on?
Supposedly 12 and 13: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/RHEL#History
Two choices:
1) Go here http://rpm.pbone.net/ mark Fedora 12 and Fedora 13. Enter switchdesktop into the search window. Pick the one that you want.
2a) Or go here http://mirrors.reflected.net/fedora/linux/releases/ select the 13 folder (the 12 folder is empty). Select "Everything". Select your Arch. Select 'os'. Select 'Packages'. Search for 'switchdesktop'.
2b) Or go here http://archives.fedoraproject.org/pub/archive/fedora/ if you want the Fedora 12 package. Follow a similar pat as in 2a

Hi All,
I just set up a computer with Scientific Linux 6.1, using the default "Workstation". Then I installed Xfce.
Question, how do I change my gdm default from gnome to Xfce?

Hi All,
I came up with a "work around". It is a bit "cheezy", so you may want to hold your nose before reading further.
Thank you all for your help and tips! -T
My Work Around:
$su # cd /usr/share/xsessions
# mv gnome.desktop gnome.desktop.orig
# ln -s /usr/share/xsessions/xfce.desktop /usr/share/xsessions/gnome.desktop
# ls -al total 32 drwxr-xr-x. 2 root root 4096 Dec 15 19:04 . drwxr-xr-x. 249 root root 12288 Dec 13 18:25 .. lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 33 Dec 15 19:04 gnome.desktop -> /usr/share/xsessions/xfce.desktop -rw-r--r--. 1 root root 6041 Nov 24 2010 gnome.desktop.orig -rw-r--r--. 1 root root 5808 Sep 23 09:34 xfce.desktop
