Hi All,
I am going out to a customer next week that I installed FC16 Xfce 64 bit from the Live CD on last week.
To my horror, in FC16, Alacarte does not work: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=734442
And, lxmed has "another instance running".
Okay, http://lxmed.sourceforge.net/ has since said he has fixed that error.
Very frustrating.
So, I thought I'd ask you guys what your preferred method of editing the menu is. Any thoughts?
Someone said this might work: https://github.com/efruchter/Gnome3_AppMenuEditor/downloads
Many thanks, -T

I find editing menus in Xfce to be a pain in my precious tushie. And we're talking about a tushie that is inured to being sat on and other indignities.
The LXDE Main Menu editor sort of works, but is no where near as fully featured as Alacarte. Worse, it is buggy and does unexpected things.
There is a text file with the menu settings, but editing it is also problematic. You must figure out the syntax it uses to determine what is a folder and what is an entry within a folder. And after you do that you discover that sometimes the syntax doesn't work. Usually you have to edit the menu files, but then again you have to figure out the syntax they use. And good luck with that because there are two systems in use side by side.
Xfce desperately needs a decent menu editor.

Hear! Hear!
Xfce desperately needs a decent menu editor.
What about xfcemenuedit? Has someone already tried?
http://xfcemenuedit.mon-asso.org/index.en.html
I do not know if it works with Xfce 4.8 and above ...
There are also some nice hints, tips and tricks here and there. :)

Hope that it helps somehow. If not, please tell us your concrete issue and what Fedora release you are using. ;)

Unfortunately it doesn't, it requires xfce-mcs-manager.

Hi
so let's try to add some more content to that. I was able to use lxmed to edit my Xfce menu. I just downloaded it from: http://lxmed.sourceforge.net/download.html
Extracted the tar.gz and opened a terminal in the extracted folder where the LXMenuEditor.jar is. A simple 'java -jar LXMenuEditor.jar' starts lxmenu. So I could not confirm your results and it would be great if you could add some relevant error messages to see what really is failing there.

I tried Gnome3AppMenuEditor.jar. It runs, but it is *SO, SO* weird that I could not figure it out.

Why not try lxmed from the source I said? On 02/26/2012 04:14 AM, Todd And Margo Chester wrote:

As long as I understand - menu in xfce is just an xml file. One can write whatever is necessary in it. For example I have made my own menu and place it next to original, when I click its icon I see only what I added. When click right mouse button on "application menu" icon there is the option "use the default menu file" or "use custom menu file". Copy original file to home directory and play with it with "Geany".
Thanks.

Hi Johannes,
Oh, I intend to. Especially now that I have downloaded the current version. (This computer is SL6; the customer is FC16). Sorry for the misunderstanding.
lxmed does have some shortcomings. I was chatting about the menu problem in general.
Interesting, in SL 6.2 there is an "Application icon" for "xfce4-menueditor".
Many thanks, -T
