easily, not a big deal.

Can you give us a screenshot?
I have attached a screenshot of the "cruder" icons. Look at the
gnome-volume-control-applet and the xfce4-power-manager icons in the
tray. Earlier these used to be much bigger with smoother features. I
used to get these icons only when the panel size was very small (~ 25
pixels).

I think this is intended, but you can file bug in Xfce bugzilla.
