Hi Todd,
Is there some replacement for the package updater?
As fas as I know, puplet is the systray applet for pup. Pup had been the update / package manager before it got replaced by PackageKit.
Unfortunately, there's no known notification applet in PackageKit, at least not in my knowledge base.
In case of Xfce, you could use a little script that uses xfce4-notify to show on-screen notification or the panel plugin xfce4-genmon-plugin that calls the script periodically.
$ yum install xfce4-genmon-plugin

Took another trip to pbone.net. The FC15 RPM works fine. (Be nice to have an official EL6 rpm.)
Question: I now have a panel item called "Generic Monitor". I am not entirely certain how to use it. Seems that both "pup" and "yumex" disappeared from EL6.

There's a sample for usage on the project page: http://goodies.xfce.org/projects/panel-plugins/xfce4-genmon-plugin
If not sure how to install, take a look at there: http://joysofprogramming.com/install-xfce4-genmon-plugin-fedora-rhel/

As said already, pup seems to be dead, in favour of PackageKit. Try to use the yumex package from Fedora repos. It is quite good. Though, yumex doesn't notify about available updates, automatically. You could report that as a feature request.

Please look at earlier discussions about this on this list. A search for "update" or "notification" should reveal instructions.

Hi Christoph,
Thank you! I now have a green check mark in my panel 1.
Since figuring out how to use genmon, I also have my UPS line voltage displayed as well. (115.9 VAC at the moment. We have a lot of brown outs.)
Very cool utility. Thank you for all your help. -T

The one thing, I have changed in the script since using is:
from: updates=$( yum check-update )
to: updates=$( yum check-update -q)
# so a not to leave a panel of gibberish, if the repos, # or mirrormanager have a breakdown.

Hi Frank,
Thank you for the "-q" tip! :-)
I took some liberties with your script. My email client clips sentences that are too long, so anyone using this will have to joins lines where they got clipped. Attached below:

# Dependencies: Oxygen icons # gpk-update-viewer (yum install gnome-packagekit)
updates=$( yum check-update -q ) status=$?

I added the extra reference to my embellishments.

Finally figured out how to do that search
"update":http://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/xfce/
Found a lot of discussion, but could not find a way of doing this.
Anyone come up with a method?
Many thanks, -T

Okay. I figured out how to use it. I have it displaying my Line Voltage from my UPS.
But, I am at a bit of a loss to figure out what commands to use to get it to for me it I have yum updates pending. Anyone have a favorite way to do this in EL6?
