I wasn't talking about the setup-ds-admin.pl script.  I was referring
to /etc/init.d/dirsrv-admin, which simply fails with no error message.
 I followed the installation instructions here:

As I mentioned before, the LDAP server is working great, but the
dirsrv-admin is not.
