Since you generalized from "search engines" to "web services", I feel 
the need to outline another case which goes beyond search engines: 
access to our own data.
Supposedly for example we use a web service for hosting and sharing 
images and that service goes down in flames. We can replace it with 
another solution, maybe a Free and self-hosted, but our data "in the 
cloud" was already lost, is too late.
