I would disagree, I run XFCE on all my quad-cores, duos, singles,
and have quite good broadband.

I would agree!, but to quote the opening post:
"I'm just wondering if the board has discussed the future of optical
media with in the project and perhaps set any dates/releases where we
plan to no longer support them"
No mention of any particular Desktop.
