knowing the ops and what they have to deal with, the registration process is
mainly for managing the channel from spambots and the like.  i'm certain if
there was another well-functioning way to ward them off that they would go
that route.  it is designed to make the whole support experience better in
the long run, even for the n00bz who end up in there.

anyone who thinks registration should be removed needs should be willing to
commit to a few hours each day being an op in the channel.  that job is not
as easy without that spambot safeguard.
