[Ambassadors] Beefy Miracle Release Party in Malang Report

Hello Ambassadors,

This is probably the first time in Malang there are Fedora Release Party
Event, Fedora users in Malang are not as many as other distro users, so it
was natural that not many events held by us.

Sunday (10/6) at the Information Technology Laboratory, 5th Floor Gedung
Kuliah Bersama (GKB) 3 at University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), Fedora
17 "Beefy Miracle" Release Party was finally held.

The event itself started a bit late, delayed about 50 minutes away from the
original plan. Promptly at 9:50 AM the event started. That's not the
committee fault anyway, because at 9 AM the committee is already prepared,
only the participants who came rather late.
How lucky, friends in KaliUMM (Linux Users Group in UMM) can simply
improvise, to fill the silence they play several short films/video clips
about Linux and open source.

When the participants had arrived, the chairman of KaliUMM, Yudhi directly
open the event. The first opportunity given to Zen Rooney, chairman of
KOLAM, who stepped forward and introduced KOLAM (Linux Users Group in
Malang).

After that, it was my turn to bring material on Fedora, I regrouped into
three topics: Fedora Project, Fedora 17 Features and Common Installation
Tips.
On the first topic, Fedora Project, I invited the participants to know more
about the Fedora community, not just known fedora as a linux distribution
(distro). How this community that supported by Red Hat has contributed
greatly to the development of Linux in particular and the world of Open
Source in general. I also explained about fedora's core value: freedom,
friends, features, first.
I emphasize how important collaboration and how the fedora developers are
always trying to work as close as possible to the upstream project. That is
not important for fedora to have unique application, rather than became
exclusive application in a single distro, an application will be much more
useful if it is available in many distro (can be used by many people)
instead.

I was slightly introduced on the terms "Remix" and "Spins" and what purpose
and give them some examples.
I did not forget to invite the participants to join the fedora project and
I was informed about the Fedora Indonesia Community[1].

Because not many participants that are fedora users, when I talk on the
topic of "Fedora 17 Features" I did not linger to discuss what's new in
Fedora 17 but I would rather talk more about the other powerful features
that have long existed in the fedora. Presto, SystemD, SELinux, PackageKit,
Kickstart is a few of the many features that I think is interesting. And
here, I was mention again how unselfish fedora developers is, they want to
communicate and collaborate with developers of other distributions to
developing PackageKit. And how fedora to be a pioneer distro that adopt
SELinux, a kernel security feature developed by the NSA (National Security
Agency).

While in the last topic of "Common Installation Tips", I explain what steps
should be done after we install fedora. I was again reminded why fedora by
default do not support the mp3 format and do not include proprietary
software like nvidia drivers, dropbox, skype, etc.. Indeed, we as end users
 feeling a bit "uncomfortable" because we should install many application
from 3rd party repository.
For simplicity, I suggest to install fedorautils, autoplus and gnome tweak
tools.

Aris Setyono from KaliUMM start to demonstrating the internet radio using
Icecast 2. Yudhi in the introduction was informed that this is one of the
research activities that have been done by KaliUMM.
These steps are demonstrated very easy to follow. Hopefully there are
participants who are interested to participate in this internet radio
implemented in their respective places.

Last turn, Rachmad Tsalaatsa guide the Webserver Load Balancing workshop.
The workshop begins with an explanation of what it is load balancing, the
types, how it works, the algorithms used, etc.. Continued by the
participants directly involved attempting to install and configure load
balancing on each desktop that has been provided by the committee.

This event was closed by party, taking picture, eating hotdog and drinking
accompanied by the strains of house music.

Thank you for KaliUMM, KOLAM and all the participants who have attended the
