connection refused from customized AMI...

Hi,

I have been working with the FC14 i386 AMI ( ami-669f680) but for some reason after I customize and upload 
my own copy to S3 (and register it of course) the copy will boot but I cannot log into it with ssh (connection refused...).
sshd is running, lots of packages installed but nothing that should have broken the ability to log in AFAIK,,,

Can't remember ever having this problem before with another AMI.  I was able to customize the FC14 X64 AMi with no issues... 
Anyone have any suggestions..?
