acpi confusion

You shouldn't.  The ACPI standard requires that your hardware power
off without damage to any components in case of ACPI software failure.
Now, whether your system complies with that part of the standard may
be another question, but it should be OK.

Of course, if you are using APM then ACPI as a cooling mechanism is
not relevant.
