Is it going to be finished off at any point so:

- no kernel text at all is seen on startup
- there is graphical shutdown
- a minimal X server is used (maybe just skip that and make GTK use the
framebuffer) - right now startup time is increased somewhat because the
nVidia drivers take ages to initialize
