Ideally the xinitrc stuff would be sufficient.  But the situation
often arises that a user logs in normally via gdm and then runs
vncserver.  In a perfect world that would work fine, but over the
years both KDE and GNOME have had serious problems with this.

The current GNOME doesn't work at all with two concurrent sessions for
the same user, for example (see bugzilla).
