Except I can't repro his issue.  I think less binary uses file magic to see 
if the file is actually an rpm or not before passing it off to lesspipe.  
I can less text files with ".rpm" on the end of them all day long here:

[jkeating at yoda jkeating]$ less -V
less 382

[jkeating at yoda jkeating]$ rpm -q less
less-382-3

[jkeating at yoda jkeating]$ echo "I am not an rpm" >> mynew-1.2.i386.rpm
[jkeating at yoda jkeating]$ less mynew-1.2.i386.rpm
I am not an rpm
mynew-1.2.i386.rpm (END)


This is on FC2 x86_64.  I can do the same on 32bit FC2 (no testing packages 
on either)
